Prominent Lagos Governorship Aspirant Warns Against One-Party Dominance Ahead of 2027

Prince Adelaja Adeoye, a governorship aspirant of the People's Democratic Party in Lagos State, has issued a strong warning to Nigerians, urging them to reject what he describes as a growing push toward one-party dominance in the country. Speaking in Lagos on Monday, Adeoye reacted to the recent defection of former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso from the New Nigeria People's Party to the African Democratic Congress, highlighting its potential impact on opposition alignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Concerns Over Weakening Opposition Politics

Adeoye expressed deep concern over recent political developments, pointing to defections into the ruling All Progressives Congress as attempts to weaken plural politics. He noted that the APC's control of 31 states raises significant issues regarding political balance and accountability within the system. According to Adeoye, these moves reflect what he called anti-democratic tendencies aimed at hollowing out opposition platforms and undermining Nigeria's multi-party democracy.

Call to Protect Multiparty Democracy

Emphasizing the importance of competitive parties, Adeoye stated that Nigeria's democratic strength fundamentally depends on the survival of a vibrant multi-party system. A multi-party system empowers Nigerians to choose their leaders without fear or favour, he asserted. He added that such a system deepens democratic ideals, guarantees accountability, and ensures responsive governance. Adeoye called for impartiality from key institutions, stressing that the Independent National Electoral Commission and the judiciary must remain unbiased and professional in discharging their duties during the 2027 elections.

Warning Against Misuse of State Power

Adeoye cautioned against the misuse of state institutions to silence dissent, warning that any attempts to deploy them against opposition would provoke resistance from citizens, civil society groups, and the international community. He alleged that a new dimension of state capture has emerged through efforts to hijack opposition parties and impose a one-party system through indirect means. Nigerians are taking note of these undemocratic actions and will respond appropriately in defence of democracy, he declared.

Lagos Ambition and Policy Agenda

On his candidacy for the Lagos governorship, Adeoye reported growing support across the state, citing an endorsement by the Lagos for Prosperity Group as evidence of confidence in his plans. He emphasized the importance of a broad coalition of opposition parties to win elections and deliver meaningful change. His vision for Lagos focuses on inclusive governance, with key priorities including:

  • Education, healthcare, and security enhancements
  • Tackling housing shortages through public-private partnerships
  • Expanding job creation via technology, SMEs, agriculture, and tourism
  • Improving transport infrastructure with rail expansion and modernized BRT systems

Adeoye pledged that transparency, environmental sustainability, and grassroots engagement would guide his approach to governance. He also recalled that the return to civil rule in 1999 marked a conscious break from military rule, expressing concern over what he perceives as a steady drift toward one-party dominance at sub-national levels.

Background on 2027 Political Landscape

Earlier reports indicated that two members of the People's Democratic Party have signaled interest in contesting governorship seats in the Southwest ahead of the 2027 elections. While Adeoye positions himself for the Lagos State race, Segun Showunmi has declared his intention to run for governor in neighbouring Ogun State. This development underscores the ongoing political maneuvering as parties prepare for the upcoming electoral cycle.
