Dele Momodu Forecasts Opposition Coalition to Challenge Tinubu in 2027
Dele Momodu, the publisher of Ovation magazine, has articulated a vision for a powerful opposition alliance that he believes could unseat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the upcoming 2027 general elections. Speaking during an interview on Channels Television's Politics Today program on Sunday, March 15, Momodu, a former presidential aspirant, emphasized the critical need for viable opposition candidates in Nigeria's political arena to ensure democratic balance.
Atiku Abubakar as a Formidable Contender
Momodu highlighted Atiku Abubakar, the former vice president of Nigeria, as a central figure in this potential coalition. He argued that Atiku's extensive political experience and persistent presidential ambitions position him as a strong contender, particularly if he secures the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ticket. "I believe if we have a combination of Atiku, maybe with Peter Obi, maybe with Rotimi Amaechi, or any other person that comes from the South, Tinubu will be gone. It will be the end of Tinubu's foundation, not the APC," Momodu stated, underscoring the strategic importance of a northern-southern partnership to weaken the ruling party's electoral prospects.
Strategic Opposition Politics and Ethnic Dynamics
In his analysis, Momodu pointed out that Atiku's political stock has risen among former critics, drawing a parallel to Donald Trump's political resilience. "From my analysis, Atiku Abubakar, even those who did not like Atiku before, now he is smelling like roses, because the enemy of your enemy is your friend. He has prepared forever, just like Donald Trump was preparing forever," he remarked. Momodu further asserted that the only viable strategy to democratically oust President Tinubu involves leveraging ethnic and religious cards, a tactic he views as essential in Nigeria's complex political landscape.
He expressed concern over the defection of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftains to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing it as a sad development that undermines opposition strength. However, he maintained that a well-coordinated opposition, led by figures like Atiku, could counter this trend and present a significant challenge in 2027.
Context and Broader Implications
Momodu's comments come amid ongoing speculation about the 2027 election, with various political figures and prophets weighing in on potential outcomes. He reiterated that without a strong opposition candidate, particularly one from the north like Atiku, President Tinubu could coast to an easy victory if faced only with southern challengers. This perspective highlights the ongoing debates within Nigerian politics about regional alliances and the role of opposition in fostering democratic accountability.
As the political landscape evolves, Momodu's insights underscore the importance of coalition-building and strategic candidacy in shaping Nigeria's future electoral dynamics.
