The Nigeria Police Force has deployed Samuel Erale as the new Commissioner of Police (CP) for Osun State, handing him the task of securing the much-contested August 15 governorship election. Erale's appointment takes effect immediately, though he is yet to physically assume duty, according to police spokesperson Abiodun Ojelabi.
Ojelabi, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, confirmed the deployment on Friday, stating that Erale's role is specifically tied to the electoral period and will last only until the conclusion of the governorship vote. The development brings an end to the tenure of CP Ibrahim Gotan, who has been redeployed to the Force Headquarters in Abuja on special duty.
Police Confirm Temporary Posting for Election CP
In a telephone interview, Ojelabi clarified the nature of Erale's posting: "What we have is that election CP is being deployed to Osun State. Although he is yet to report or assume office." This statement underscores the temporary and election-specific mandate of the new police chief.
Meanwhile, Gotan is to report to the Commissioner of Police in charge of Communications Operations at the Force Headquarters in Abuja for a special duty assignment, according to reports. The police hierarchy has not issued an official statement explaining the sudden change in leadership.
Months of Political Pressure Against Gotan
The redeployment of Gotan comes after months of sustained criticism from the Osun State Government, civil society organisations, and the ruling Accord Party. In June, a coalition of civil society groups staged a protest in Osogbo, the state capital, demanding his removal over alleged bias in handling election-related violence and other politically sensitive security matters.
The Accord Party, which controls the state government, also petitioned President Bola Tinubu and the Inspector-General of Police, accusing Gotan of partiality in responding to attacks on its members and of targeting officials loyal to Governor Ademola Adeleke. These petitions and protests built a climate of distrust around the state police command.
Controversial Raid on SSG's Residence Intensified Calls for Change
The pressure on Gotan reached its peak after police operatives raided the residence of the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Teslim Igbalaye, on Wednesday. The SSG was arrested alongside five others during the operation, which was linked to allegations of vote-buying and harbouring a wanted suspect.
According to police, the raid recovered N4.8 million in cash, two permanent voter cards, voter registers, and other materials believed to be connected to electoral offences. The state government, however, dismissed the operation as politically motivated, alleging that security agencies were being weaponised to intimidate senior government officials ahead of the election. Barely 24 hours after the arrest, Igbalaye was released, but the controversy continued to stoke political anger.
Historical Precedent of Police Commissioner Replacements Before Osun Polls
This is not the first time Osun State has witnessed the replacement of a police commissioner in the run-up to a governorship election. In 2022, then CP Olawale Olokode was redeployed to the Force Headquarters in Abuja after civil groups and supporters of former Minister of Interior Rauf Aregbesola demanded his removal. He was succeeded by Julius Okoro, who oversaw the 2022 governorship election.
Political observers note that the recurring pattern highlights deep-seated concerns about the neutrality of security agencies in Osun, a state regarded as one of Nigeria's most politically competitive battlegrounds. The redeployment of Erale is expected to bring a fresh approach, but the challenges are immense.
High-Stakes Contest with Multiple Candidates
The new commissioner assumes office at a time of heightened political tension. Ahead of the August 15 poll, Osun has witnessed a spike in politically linked violence, arrests, and accusations among rival parties. The election will feature incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party, Bola Oyabamiji of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and candidates from 12 other political parties.
Erale's ability to command impartial security operations will be critical not only for the credibility of the election but also for the stability of the state. As the countdown to the governorship poll continues, all eyes will be on the new police leadership to ensure a free, fair, and secure electoral process.
