NNPP Demands Electoral Transparency to Combat Voter Apathy Ahead of 2027 Polls

The New Nigeria People's Party (NNPP) has issued a crucial call to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), urging it to prioritize the restoration of public confidence in Nigeria's electoral process as the nation approaches the 2027 general elections. In a statement released on Wednesday, the party emphasized that declining voter turnout is not primarily due to internal party disputes but stems from a widespread perception among Nigerians that the electoral system lacks transparency and fairness.

NNPP Spokesperson Highlights Trust Deficit as Key Issue

Ladipo Johnson, the National Publicity Secretary of the NNPP, articulated the party's position from Abuja, responding to recent concerns raised by INEC regarding the impact of internal party conflicts on its operations. Johnson acknowledged that such disputes often lead to legal battles involving the commission, which can drain administrative resources and time. However, he argued that a more critical challenge facing Nigeria's democracy is the pervasive loss of trust in the electoral process.

"While administrative hurdles are real, I strongly urge the INEC Chairman to recognise a far more dangerous reality," Johnson stated. "The greatest cause of voter apathy in Nigeria is not internal party friction; it is the widespread perception that INEC is complicit in subverting the will of the people." He maintained that many Nigerians believe election outcomes do not accurately reflect public sentiment, leading to disillusionment and reduced participation at the polls.

Call for Reforms to Strengthen Democratic Integrity

The NNPP further stressed that while political parties must enhance internal democracy and minimize unnecessary litigation, INEC also bears a significant responsibility to implement reforms that rebuild trust. The party asserted that meaningful changes and increased transparency are essential to reassure citizens that their votes hold weight and can influence electoral results. According to Johnson, "Until INEC demonstrates absolute transparency and proves it is an unbiased arbiter, no amount of internal party stability will bring Nigerians back to the polling units." This sentiment underscores the urgency for the commission to address the crisis of confidence head-on.

INEC Initiates Review of Political Party Regulations

The NNPP's remarks coincide with INEC's announcement of plans to review its 2022 regulations and guidelines for political parties. Joash Amupitan, the INEC Chairman, disclosed this initiative during a technical workshop held in Ikot Ekpene, aimed at revising the commission's guidelines. Amupitan explained that the review seeks to improve transparency and bolster the integrity of the electoral process in preparation for future elections. Additionally, it will align the commission's regulations with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2026, with stakeholders encouraged to contribute ideas to strengthen Nigeria's democratic framework.

This development highlights a potential step towards addressing the concerns raised by the NNPP, as both the party and the electoral commission recognize the need for systemic improvements to foster greater public engagement and trust in Nigeria's electoral landscape.
