Ogun Assembly Minority Leader Switches Allegiance to Ruling APC
The political landscape in Ogun State has shifted significantly as Lukman Adeleye, the Minority Leader of the Ogun State House of Assembly, has officially defected from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). This move, which occurred alongside other members of the minority caucus, highlights the ongoing erosion of opposition ranks as the 2027 general elections approach.
Call for Support for Tinubu's Re-election
Adeleye, who represents the Odogbolu State Constituency, used the occasion to call on Nigerians to support the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027. He praised Tinubu's administration for initiating reforms that he believes are capable of repositioning the country. According to Adeleye, a second term for Tinubu would consolidate ongoing efforts to stabilize Nigeria's political and economic systems.
"The administration has laid a foundation that could steer the country out of its current challenges," Adeleye stated. He emphasized that continuity in governance would ensure a more inclusive structure where citizens can thrive without fear of economic, political, or social marginalization.
Addressing Economic Hardships and Defection Motives
The lawmaker also appealed to Nigerians to endure the current economic hardships, describing them as temporary and necessary for long-term gains. "The current challenges, though difficult, are not comparable to the benefits these reforms will yield in the near future," he said. Adeleye highlighted the commitment of President Tinubu, Governor Dapo Abiodun, and other APC leaders to rebuilding the country and ensuring a better future for all.
Dismissing insinuations that his defection was driven by political survival ahead of 2027, Adeleye insisted that his decision was informed by his experience in governance since assuming office. He noted that effective governance requires collaboration between the executive and legislative arms, and his move was aimed at strengthening that synergy.
"What is happening today is in appreciation of the strides of the Ogun State Government under Dapo Abiodun and the leadership of President Bola Tinubu. Governance is a collective responsibility, and this step is in the interest of development," he explained.
APC's Response and Future Implications
Reacting to the development, APC leaders in Odogbolu Local Council welcomed Adeleye into the party, expressing confidence that the ruling party would retain its dominance in the state. Yekini Rasheed, the APC Ward 9 Chairman in Ibefun, described Adeleye's defection as a significant boost and assured him of the party's support for his second-term ambition.
This defection is seen as a strategic gain for the APC, potentially strengthening its legislative influence in Ogun State and setting the stage for the upcoming electoral battles. It underscores the fluid nature of Nigerian politics, where allegiances can shift based on perceived governance successes and political calculations.
