Olubadan Issues Stern Warning to Politicians on Religion and Elections Ahead of 2027
In a significant address, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, has strongly cautioned politicians across all party lines against leveraging religion as a tool for electoral advantage, stressing that Nigeria's democratic framework must evolve beyond divisive and manipulative tendencies. Speaking with journalists at his Bodija residence in Ibadan, Oyo State, during the Eid-el-Fitr celebrations, the revered traditional ruler highlighted that contemporary democratic realities no longer tolerate the exploitation of religious sentiments for political gain.
Call for Unity Beyond Religious Divides
"We have progressed beyond using religion as a foundation for politics. That question does not even arise in today's context. Individuals from diverse backgrounds come together, fulfill their roles, and move forward harmoniously. Religion should not be a determining factor in our political landscape," Ladoja asserted. His remarks underscore a growing concern over the potential for religious polarization in the lead-up to the 2027 elections, urging a shift towards more inclusive and issue-based campaigning.
Addressing Security Challenges in Ibadan
The monarch also delved into the persistent insecurity issues plaguing parts of Oyo State, particularly incidents of kidnapping. He noted that while such challenges continue to exist, security agencies are making steady and commendable progress in addressing them. "Many of the reported cases are criminal acts driven primarily by extortion rather than organized terrorism. In Ibadanland, we are effectively managing these issues. I am not claiming there are no problems, but they are being resolved as they emerge. Some of these incidents do not even constitute organized kidnappings," he explained.
To illustrate this progress, Ladoja cited a recent case along the Oluyole axis of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, revealing that suspects had been apprehended and victims successfully rescued. "Three of the suspects involved in the Oluyole incident have been arrested, and two victims have been freed. This demonstrates that we are getting to the root of the matter and making tangible strides in enhancing safety," he added, providing a concrete example of the ongoing efforts to combat crime in the region.
Land Grabbing Identified as a Critical Threat
While acknowledging security concerns, the Olubadan identified land grabbing as a more pressing and insidious threat to Ibadan's socio-economic development. He warned that this issue could significantly deter investors and undermine long-term growth prospects. "The major problem we face is land grabbing. It has the potential to destroy investment opportunities. You acquire a piece of land, and before you can return, someone else has unlawfully taken over. That is a serious and urgent concern that requires immediate attention," he emphasized, highlighting the economic ramifications of this practice.
Proactive Measures by Traditional Institutions
In response to these challenges, Ladoja assured residents that the traditional institution, in close collaboration with government authorities, is taking proactive and decisive steps to curb the menace of land grabbing and enhance overall security. "Measures include strengthening community vigilance and reviving local security structures. The traditional institution is not sitting idle. We are actively sensitizing our people and mobilizing local vigilantes. Ibadan possesses strong traditional structures, and we are reviving them to maintain order and stability," he stated, outlining a comprehensive approach that leverages both traditional and modern security frameworks.
