APC Bars Omisore, 6 Others from Osun Governorship Primary
Omisore, 6 Others Disqualified from Osun APC Primary

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has taken a decisive step ahead of its Osun State governorship primary, disqualifying a significant number of aspirants. The party's Screening Committee has barred former National Secretary, Senator Iyiola Omisore, and six other hopefuls from contesting the upcoming primary election.

Mass Disqualification Over Nomination Rules

The Committee, which was led by Chief Obinna Uzoh, completed its work on 4 December 2025 and presented its findings to the APC National Working Committee in Abuja the following day. The core reason for the sweeping disqualifications was a failure to comply with mandatory party requirements.

According to the committee's report, the affected aspirants did not satisfy a crucial condition. They failed to provide proof of sponsorship from at least five fully registered and financially up-to-date party members from each Local Government Area (LGA) in Osun State. This rule is enshrined in Articles 9.3(i) and 31.2(ii) of the APC Constitution and Paragraph 6(c) of the party's guidelines.

The disqualified aspirants are: Senator Iyiola Omisore, Babatunde Haketer Oralusi, Oyedotun Babayemi, Dr Akin Ogunbiyi, Benedict Alabi, Adegoke Rasheed Okiki, and Senator Babajide Omoworare.

Only Two Aspirants Make the Cut

In a stark contrast, only two aspirants successfully navigated the rigorous screening process and were cleared to participate in the primary scheduled for 13 December 2025. The lucky duo are Mulikat Abiola Jimoh and Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji.

The Committee detailed its methodology, which involved a two-pronged approach. First, there was a meticulous examination of all submitted documents, forms, and declarations to verify their authenticity. Second, each aspirant faced a structured interview designed to test their knowledge of party rules, personal preparedness, and overall suitability for the candidacy.

Petitions and Calls for Party Unity

The screening process was not without external input. The Committee acknowledged receiving a petition from the Osun APC Renewal Group, which raised serious concerns about compliance with nomination requirements. The panel described the issues raised as "weighty, substantial, and relevant to the integrity of the screening process," emphasizing the need for uniform application of rules.

A significant observation in the report highlights the internal challenges facing the Osun APC. The Committee noted that the party structure in the state remains divided and issued a strong recommendation for immediate reconciliation.

"It is therefore recommended that the National Leadership immediately establish a robust reconciliation mechanism to unify all factions and groups. A harmonised party is essential for a credible primary and success at the gubernatorial election," the report stated. It further advised that political appointments and campaign roles should be distributed evenly to foster inclusion.

The Osun State governorship election has been scheduled by the Independent National Electoral Commission for 8 August 2026.
