The polling unit where Senator Francis Fadahunsi, representing Osun East, is expected to cast his ballot remained calm on Saturday, with voters queuing as security personnel maintained a strong presence. At PU 001, Ilase NUD Primary School, Ward 04, in Obokun Local Government Area, elderly voters and persons with disabilities (PWDs) were given priority.
At about 10:19 a.m., Yetif Amseh, a 100-year-old woman from the Ogbonaro area of Ilase, was assisted to cast her ballot at the polling unit, according to Premium Times.
Calm Atmosphere Amid Prior Tension
The calm atmosphere at the polling unit comes days after Fadahunsi allegedly threatened to kill members of the Accord Party found in Ilesa ahead of Saturday's governorship election. The alleged threat was made on Wednesday while addressing supporters during a protest at the palace of the Owa Obokun of Ijesaland.
The protest was over what Fadahunsi described as incessant killings of APC members. His comments reportedly heightened political tension in the community ahead of the election.
Police Invitation and Clarification
Fadahunsi was later invited by the police over the alleged threat. However, he issued a clarification, saying his use of the word “kill” was intended to mean voting against the opposition.
Governor Ademola Adeleke is seeking a second term on the Accord Party's ticket, which he joined from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) last December. Fadahunsi is a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The election proceeded with security personnel ensuring order at the polling unit, and the prioritization of elderly and disabled voters was observed.
