PDP Relies on Supreme Court Verdict to End Leadership Dispute
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has declared its reliance on the Supreme Court's impending judgment to conclusively settle the ongoing leadership crisis within the party. This position was formally communicated in a press statement issued on Monday by the party's National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong.
Growing Concerns Among Party Members
Ememobong acknowledged that genuine PDP members across Nigeria have voiced significant concerns regarding the party's future and the broader implications for the country's democracy. These anxieties have been heightened by a series of disturbing events that have unfolded over the past 48 hours.
"To them, and other fair-minded, democracy-loving Nigerians, we reassure that we have taken this battle to the Supreme Court for the determination of all the issues relating to the leadership of our party, particularly as it relates to what constitutes an internal affair," the statement read.
The party emphasized that with the appeal and relevant applications already filed and served on all involved parties, it remains hopeful that the apex court will expedite the hearing and adjudication of this matter in the interest of democratic principles.
Condemnation of Rival Convention
The PDP statement strongly condemned what it described as a "pre-Easter jamboree" organized by APC sympathizers and members of what it termed "Wike's Autocratic Party." The party asserted that this gathering, which was misleadingly labeled a PDP convention, was conducted in contempt of the Court of Appeal. According to the PDP, parties had previously agreed with the court on procedural steps, only for opponents to later engage in actions that could undermine the entire process.
Ememobong confirmed that the PDP has been served with the processes of the appeal at the Supreme Court, alongside other legal suits challenging the legitimacy of the aforementioned convention. He stated that the validity of that gathering is now a subject before the court, and the PDP is committed to pursuing this legal avenue diligently until a final resolution is reached.
Recent Court Ruling and Immediate Response
In a related development, the Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice Abdulmalik, delivered a judgment on Monday morning. The ruling favored individuals backed by Nyesom Wike and described as APC apologists, granting them access to the PDP secretariat and directing security agencies to provide protection during their occupation.
The PDP had previously sought the recusal of Justice Abdulmalik from the case, citing alleged bias against the party. In response to this judgment, Ememobong announced that the PDP has instructed its legal team to immediately file an appeal and other pertinent applications to challenge the court's decision.
Allegations of Political Orchestration
The statement further accused the Bola Tinubu-led APC government of orchestrating the current crises facing the PDP and other opposition parties in Nigeria. "These crises are clearly orchestrated by the Bola Tinubu-led APC government, who have shown morbid fear for the existence of alternative political platforms, and are determined to foist a one-party state on the country," Ememobong asserted.
He suggested that this fear is driven by the government's awareness of impending public rejection due to its perceived poor performance in critical governance areas such as security, the economy, and social welfare.
Call for Hope and Judicial Intervention
In conclusion, the PDP urged its members and all Nigerians to maintain hope, expressing sincere expectation that the Supreme Court will intervene to safeguard multi-party democracy through the appeal before it. The party highlighted that the Supreme Court now holds a historic opportunity to uphold and defend the Nigerian Constitution, as well as its prior decisions regarding the jurisdiction of courts in the internal affairs of political parties, when it delivers its final judgment on this pivotal matter.
