PDP Urges Tinubu to Exonerate INEC Chairman Amupitan from Partisan Politics
PDP Calls on Tinubu to Exonerate INEC Chairman from Politics

The South-West Zonal Executive Committee of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) has issued a direct appeal to President Bola Tinubu, urging him to safeguard the integrity of Nigeria's legal and electoral frameworks by insulating them from partisan interference. During a press conference held in Ibadan on Monday, the party's Zonal Publicity Secretary, Chief Sanya Atofarati, emphasized the critical need for fairness and credibility in the nation's democratic processes.

Call for Neutrality in Electoral Processes

Chief Atofarati specifically called on President Tinubu to exonerate the National Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, from partisan politics. He stressed that individuals in sensitive positions, such as the INEC leadership, must operate above political interests to maintain public trust. "I am putting this challenge to Tinubu. He should exonerate Amupitan from partisan politics. Amupitan should assure Nigerians of his neutrality," Atofarati declared, highlighting concerns over potential bias in upcoming elections.

Allegations of APC Interference

The PDP spokesperson alleged that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is actively working to undermine the opposition by attempting to prevent the PDP from fielding candidates in forthcoming elections. "I can tell you that the APC is doing everything possible to ensure that the PDP does not field candidates," he stated, pointing to what he described as a troubling pattern of political meddling. Atofarati cited recent incidents in Ekiti State, where the PDP's candidate was initially disqualified without justification, forcing the party to seek legal redress and eventually secure a favorable court judgment.

Legal Battles and Electoral Preparedness

Expanding on the challenges faced, Atofarati revealed that a similar situation is unfolding in Osun State, expressing optimism that the courts will again rule in the PDP's favor. "I can assure you that before the end of this week, there will be a positive outcome from the court," he predicted. Despite these obstacles, the PDP affirmed its readiness for the elections, insisting it will not be deterred by attempts to undermine its participation. "We are fully prepared for the elections. We are confident, ready, and determined to participate, and I can assure you we will remain steadfast in our pursuit of victory," Atofarati asserted.

Internal Party Dynamics and Support

In addition to addressing external threats, the PDP also addressed internal matters by cautioning former Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, against making divisive and inflammatory remarks. Simultaneously, the party reaffirmed its unwavering support for Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, underscoring its commitment to unity and stability within its ranks.

This call from the PDP underscores growing tensions in Nigeria's political landscape as elections approach, with the opposition demanding greater transparency and impartiality from key institutions like INEC to ensure a level playing field for all parties involved.
