A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Umar Sani, has refuted assertions that former President Goodluck Jonathan is hesitant to contest the 2027 presidential election, arguing that such claims undermine his potential candidacy. Sani pointed out that many Nigerian leaders initially showed reluctance before eventually assuming the highest office in the land.
Speaking during an interview on Arise TV, Sani emphasized that political hesitation has historically not prevented individuals from becoming president. He cited the example of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who was initially reluctant to re-enter politics in 1999 but later accepted the role after being asked to succeed Murtala Mohammed.
This development follows the announcement by a faction of the PDP that declared Jonathan as its presidential candidate for 2027, a move that has sparked diverse reactions from Nigerians. Some social media users expressed skepticism, while others questioned why Jonathan has not publicly confirmed or denied his interest in the race.
Peace Profound criticized supporters of Peter Obi who now oppose Jonathan's return, noting that they previously praised his tenure. Inka suggested that Jonathan might be under pressure to enter the race to split votes, while Onoyom David argued that Nigerians have moved on and seek fresh leadership. Sammy UgoNabo wondered why Jonathan remains silent, warning that his lack of clarity could damage his legacy.
In related commentary, former Senator Shehu Sani recently criticized Jonathan for his handling of the 2015 election campaign, stating that the former president made mistakes that cost him the presidency. Sani listed three actions Jonathan took that President Bola Tinubu or any other leader would not replicate.
