PDP Governors Appeal for Calm Ahead of Critical Court of Appeal Ruling
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors have issued a strong appeal for calm and restraint among party members and supporters as Nigeria's Court of Appeal prepares to deliver a crucial judgment on the party's lingering leadership dispute. The appellate court is scheduled to rule on Monday, March 9, 2026, in a case that has significant implications for Nigeria's largest opposition party.
A Defining Moment for Nigerian Democracy
Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed of Bauchi State, who serves as chairman of the PDP Governors' Forum, described the impending judgment as "a defining moment for Nigeria's democracy." In a statement released on Sunday, March 8, 2026, and signed by the forum's Director-General, Dr. Emmanuel Agbo, Mohammed emphasized the party's commitment to respecting judicial processes regardless of the outcome.
"Whatever the decision may be, the PDP reaffirms its respect for the judicial process and its commitment to peace," the statement declared. The governors specifically urged members aspiring to contest the 2027 general elections to maintain faith in the party's platform during this critical period.
Call for Mature Response and Maximum Restraint
The PDP leadership issued a clear directive for all party members to demonstrate maturity in their reactions to the court's ruling. "We urge our members, supporters, and indeed all Nigerians to remain calm and disciplined in their reactions to the ruling," the statement continued. "Our collective response must reflect maturity and a deep respect for the rule of law."
The governors called for maximum restraint before, during, and after the judgment, promising that party leadership would meet immediately to review the decision and chart an appropriate course of action. This appeal comes as the PDP attempts to steady itself after months of internal tensions and refocus ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Background of the Leadership Dispute
The current legal battle stems from earlier court proceedings regarding the PDP's 2025 Elective Convention. The Oyo State High Court previously upheld the convention, validating Kabiru Turaki as the party's chairman. However, the faction led by Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike dismissed that ruling, claiming it lacked legal effect on Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and party proceedings.
This latest court judgment centers on the legitimacy of PDP leadership, intensifying internal power struggles within the opposition party. The PDP has already met with INEC alongside the rival faction, where both sides presented their positions on the internal crisis. INEC officials stated they were aware the matter is before the Court of Appeal and would wait for the final judgment before recognizing any leadership.
The Kabiru Turaki-led National Working Committee has indicated it will continue functioning as the party's leadership while awaiting the court's decision. The PDP's internal conflicts have drawn attention from various political observers and analysts who see the resolution as crucial for the party's ability to effectively challenge in upcoming elections.
