PDP Reconciliation Efforts Stumble Amid Persistent Divisions and 2027 Election Pressures

Recent attempts to reconcile the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2027 general elections are encountering formidable obstacles, as deep-seated divisions and uncompromising stances among key factions threaten to derail any meaningful truce. Despite renewed dialogue and cautious optimism among party leaders, the path to unity remains fraught with challenges, including competing ambitions and lingering trust deficits.

Factional Appointments and Convention Planning Amidst Turmoil

In a move to prepare for its crucial national convention scheduled for March 29 and 30, 2026, a faction within the PDP has appointed former Enugu State Governor Okezie Ikpeazu as Chairman of the 2026 National Convention Planning Committee. The committee, tasked with planning and coordinating the event in accordance with party guidelines, includes notable figures such as NCWC Chairman Abdulrahman Mohammed, Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu, and Senators Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, Abba Moro, and Abdul Ningi. Additionally, the party has named Board of Trustees Chairman Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, along with former governors Ayodele Fayose and Samuel Ortom, as committee members.

The inauguration of the main committee and its sub-committees is set for March 21, 2026, at Chida Hotel, with the planning structure encompassing various sub-committees responsible for zoning, electoral matters, screening, media, and security, among others. However, these preparations unfold against a backdrop of internal strife, exacerbated by a recent Appeal Court judgment that nullified the Ibadan Elective National Convention, affirmed the expulsion of certain members, and recognized the leadership of former Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum, further complicating party dynamics.

Voices of Dissent and Calls for Unity

Amidst the reconciliation push, prominent party members have expressed skepticism and outright opposition. Lagos chieftain Adetokunbo Pearse dismissed any arrangement that involves the PDP forgoing its presidential ticket in 2027, labeling it as "unacceptable and null." He criticized the meeting between former presidential aspirant Gbenga Hashim and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, accusing Hashim of prioritizing personal ambition over party cohesion and zoning principles. Pearse emphasized that the PDP had already zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to the South, warning that any deviation could deepen mistrust within the party.

Similarly, PDP National Vice Chairman (South-West) Ajisafe Toyese acknowledged the necessity of reconciliation but cautioned against factions imposing their terms on others. He stressed that any successful peace process would require mutual concessions and urged leaders to avoid arrogance and superiority in their positions. These sentiments highlight the delicate balance needed to navigate the party's internal conflicts.

Hashim's Emphasis on Cohesion and Democratic Role

In a statement following his meeting with Governor Makinde in Abuja, Gbenga Hashim underscored the critical importance of unity within the PDP, describing their engagement as productive and forward-looking. He argued that cohesion is central to the party's ability to serve as a credible opposition and provide national leadership, especially at a time when Nigeria's democratic system demands stability and strong institutions. Hashim commended Makinde for his commitment to the PDP and expressed confidence that sustained dialogue among stakeholders could help bridge internal divisions and reposition the party for improved competitiveness in future elections.

This meeting is part of broader ongoing consultations and behind-the-scenes engagements aimed at redefining alliances, strengthening internal structures, and managing tensions ahead of the next electoral cycle. However, observers note that while dialogue has resumed, the PDP's journey toward unity remains uncertain, with zoning disputes and trust deficits continuing to undermine efforts to present a united front for the 2027 polls.
