Recent attempts to reconcile the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2027 general elections are encountering formidable obstacles, as deep-seated divisions and uncompromising stances among key factions threaten to derail any meaningful truce. Factional Appointments and Convention Planning Amidst Turmoil
In a move to prepare for its crucial national convention scheduled for March 29 and 30, 2026, a faction within the PDP has appointed former Enugu State Governor Okezie Ikpeazu as Chairman of the 2026 National Convention Planning Committee. The committee, tasked with planning and coordinating the event in accordance with party guidelines, includes notable figures such as NCWC Chairman Abdulrahman Mohammed, Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu, and Senators Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, Abba Moro, and Abdul Ningi. Additionally, the party has named Board of Trustees Chairman Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, along with former governors Ayodele Fayose and Samuel Ortom, as committee members.
The inauguration of the main committee and its sub-committees is set for March 21, 2026, at Chida Hotel, with the planning structure encompassing various sub-committees responsible for zoning, electoral matters, screening, media, and security, among others. Lagos chieftain Adetokunbo Pearse dismissed any arrangement that involves the PDP forgoing its presidential ticket in 2027, labeling it as "unacceptable and null." He criticized the meeting between former presidential aspirant Gbenga Hashim and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, accusing Hashim of prioritizing personal ambition over party cohesion and zoning principles. Pearse emphasized that the PDP had already zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to the South, warning that any deviation could deepen mistrust within the party.
Similarly, PDP National Vice Chairman (South-West) Ajisafe Toyese acknowledged the necessity of reconciliation but cautioned against factions imposing their terms on others.
