PDP Unveils Iyabo Obasanjo as Ogun Central Candidate

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State has officially unveiled Iyabo Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, as its candidate for the Ogun Central Senatorial District in the 2027 general elections. The event took place at the party's secretariat in Abeokuta.

During the ceremony, the PDP governorship candidate, Hon. Ladi Adebutu, and his running mate, Lateefah Sowunmi-Kolapo, along with other party leaders, formally presented Obasanjo as the party's choice for the senatorial seat. Obasanjo expressed gratitude to the party leadership for selecting her as the candidate.

Obasanjo Criticizes APC

In her address, Obasanjo detailed her reasons for leaving the All Progressives Congress (APC), accusing the party's leadership of persistent disregard, rejection, and unfair treatment. She claimed she was not included in the consensus arrangement that produced Senator Solomon Adeola (Yayi) as the APC's consensus candidate for Ogun Central.

Obasanjo questioned the APC's decision to choose Kudirat Balogun from Ogun East as Adeola's running mate, alleging that the ruling party showed disregard for Ogun Central, particularly regarding the zoning arrangement in the state.

“When I entered APC, I did it with all my heart. I believed APC would pick its candidates through consensus. When it was time for the central district, a meeting was called. Some people, including APC leaders, chose consensus and raised hands at the meeting, but I thought we should have been called together before making a decision. If you don't consult those in the central and east districts, it's unfair.”

She added, “No one even apologized to me. APC can't treat me like a toddler. They said the west will produce the governor, and the deputy will go to the east. We don't want the speaker at the central – we want the deputy governor. I was mistreated, which is why I left APC.”

Adebutu Welcomes Obasanjo

Earlier, Hon. Adebutu expressed concern over Obasanjo's decision to join the PDP but maintained that with his running mate, Sowemimo-Kolapo, by his side and the support of other party members, the PDP remains the strongest contender for the 2027 elections in Ogun State.
