Peter Obi Clarifies 2027 Stance: 'I Am Not Joining ADC, I'm Already Part of It'
Peter Obi: I'm not joining ADC, I'm already part of it

In a move to quell swirling political rumours, former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has made a definitive statement about his position ahead of the 2027 general elections. He firmly dismissed speculation about a formal move to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), asserting that he is already an integral part of the political coalition built around the party.

"I Can't Re-Join What I Am Already Part Of"

Speaking during an interactive session on X Space on the night of Sunday, December 28, 2025, Obi directly addressed the rumours of a pending defection. He clarified that his involvement with the ADC is not a future event but a present reality, established through his role in the broader opposition coalition that has included the ADC from its inception.

"I am not joining ADC. I can't re-join what I am already a part of," Obi stated emphatically. This statement served to dismiss media reports suggesting that a formal declaration ceremony was necessary for his integration into the party's structure and activities.

Coalition Dynamics and Relationship with Atiku

Obi further elaborated on the internal workings of the coalition, making it clear that his established presence does not necessitate others making way for him. "Nobody is stepping down for me in ADC. I've been part of the coalition from day one," he added. This reinforces the narrative that the current focus is on a collective opposition effort rather than individual political maneuvers.

The former Anambra State governor also took the opportunity to address his relationship with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who has similarly been linked to the ADC coalition in recent months. Obi maintained a stance of diplomatic respect toward his former presidential running mate under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

"We have all agreed to work together and Atiku remains my respected leader," Obi stated, signalling a continued alliance within the opposition fold.

Laying the Groundwork for 2027 Opposition Unity

This clarification from Peter Obi comes amid intense speculation and discussions regarding the formation of a potent "mega-party" or a unified opposition front capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next election cycle. By framing his position as part of a pre-existing and ongoing agreement, Obi has signalled that the foundational work for opposition cohesion is already actively being laid, well ahead of the 2027 polls.

The strategic communication appears designed to present a picture of stability and pre-planned unity within the opposition ranks, aiming to reassure supporters and stakeholders that the coalition is not a last-minute arrangement but a deliberate, long-term political project.
