In a definitive statement that has set the stage for the next electoral cycle, former Anambra State governor and Labour Party presidential flagbearer, Peter Obi, has publicly declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election. He simultaneously dismissed widespread speculation that he would consider running as a vice-presidential candidate.
'Learning to Govern, Not to Be Vice'
The clarification came during an extended interactive session on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on December 29, 2025. When directly questioned about the possibility of him accepting a vice-presidential ticket in the forthcoming election, Obi responded with characteristic candour.
"So I am flying all over the world to learn how to govern in order to be vice?" Obi retorted, framing his extensive international engagements as part of a preparation for leadership, not a secondary role. He highlighted a specific research trip to Indonesia, where he spent over a week, including travels outside Jakarta to meet with the nation's president. "Do you visit the President to learn how to be vice?" he asked rhetorically.
A Focus on Preparedness and Qualification
Peter Obi emphasised his commitment to thorough preparation, underscoring that his actions are geared towards the highest office. He, however, acknowledged the uncertainty of the future, stating, "I am not God. I might not even be alive in 2027." He cited the tragic example of a leading candidate in another country who died in a helicopter crash, expressing gratitude for his own life amidst what he described as daunting daily challenges.
The former governor also hinted at facing obstacles, noting instances where he was prevented from travelling out of Nigeria. Despite these hurdles, his resolve appears unshaken. "Peter Obi is contesting for the office of the President," he stated unequivocally.
Declaring Capacity and Vision for Nigeria
Concluding his remarks, Obi presented a three-fold case for his candidacy: capacity, competence, and compassion. He asserted that his extensive study, hands-on experience, and diligent research have uniquely equipped him for the task of national transformation.
"I am most qualified and I tell anybody I will change this country," he declared. "I have seen the experience, I have studied and followed it. That is how I work. I have the capacity, competence and compassion." This statement serves as a clear manifesto of intent, positioning him not as a potential deputy but as a principal contender for Nigeria's presidency in the 2027 general elections.
