Rivers Bye-Election: PDP, LP, ADC Have No Candidates, Says Electoral Commissioner
The forthcoming bye-elections for two constituencies in Rivers State will proceed without candidates from three major political parties, according to the state's electoral commissioner. Professor Gabriel Yomere, the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Rivers State, confirmed that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP), and African Democratic Congress (ADC) have no candidates for the elections scheduled for February 21.
Internal Party Issues Lead to Exclusion
During a briefing with journalists, Yomere explained that the absence of these parties stems from internal and procedural challenges within their organizations. He stated that these issues prevented them from fielding candidates for the crucial bye-elections, which aim to fill long-vacant seats in the state assembly.
The two affected constituencies are Khana Constituency 2 and Ahoada East Constituency 2. These seats have remained empty for over two years, creating representation gaps in the Rivers State House of Assembly.
Background of Vacant Seats
The Khana Constituency 2 seat became vacant following the death of Dinebari Loolo in September 2023. Meanwhile, the Ahoada East Constituency 2 seat was vacated in December 2023 after Edison Ehie resigned to serve as Chief of Staff to the Rivers State Governor.
With the major parties out of contention, the electoral landscape has shifted significantly. Twelve candidates from seven smaller political parties are now contesting the elections, providing voters in these constituencies with alternative choices for new representatives.
INEC's Preparations and Assurance
Yomere assured residents that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has completed all necessary logistical preparations to ensure a credible and orderly electoral process. He emphasized the commission's commitment to transparency and professionalism in conducting the bye-elections.
In a notable departure from previous practices, Yomere revealed that all Supervisory Presiding Officers for the election will be permanent INEC staff members rather than National Youth Service Corps personnel. This change aims to enhance the efficiency and reliability of the electoral process.
The commissioner's announcement highlights the evolving dynamics of the political contest in Rivers State, where smaller parties now have a unique opportunity to gain representation in the state assembly. Voters in Khana and Ahoada East constituencies will decide among the 12 candidates vying for these crucial seats.
