SDP's Adebayo Criticizes ADC's Hypocritical Politics Ahead of 2027 Elections

Prince Adewole Adebayo, the leader of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and its 2023 presidential candidate, has delivered a sharp critique of Nigeria's current political landscape, particularly targeting the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for what he describes as "hypocritical politics." In a recent interview, Adebayo outlined his vision for the 2027 general elections, emphasizing ideological clarity over political maneuvering.

Opposition Space and Democratic Health

Adebayo dismissed concerns about a shrinking opposition space, arguing that democracy should focus on public sentiment rather than incumbency counts. "The way democracy is supposed to work, there is no way the majority sentiment among the Nigerian electorate will not determine the state of our democracy," he stated. He urged the media to shift attention from incumbent politicians to ordinary citizens, questioning whether people feel better governed and properly led.

Critique of ADC's Merger Politics

When asked about the ADC's strategy of merging with other parties to challenge the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027, Adebayo was dismissive. "It's not relevant because it's all part of your narrative; it is not my business," he said. He emphasized that the SDP's focus is on aligning with the Constitution and the people's aspirations, not on political migrations. "If 36 governors decide to go to one party, it is not my business to comment on that," he added, noting his long-standing commitment to the SDP since 1991.

Adebayo accused the ADC of engaging in "politics of hypocrisy," citing examples of politicians who failed to enact meaningful reforms while in power but now criticize the system. "That is the kind of politics we don't want – politics of personality without principle, jumping from place to place," he asserted. He described the ADC as a "branch of APC" and the APC as a "scion of the PDP," labeling them all as part of a "relay of failure."

SDP's Ideological Stance and 2027 Vision

The SDP leader outlined his party's commitment to ideological redirection, focusing on Chapter Two of the Constitution – Fundamental Objectives and Directive Principle of State Policy. "Our line is to lay the foundation for the ideological redirection of the country," he explained. He announced the SDP's involvement in the FixNass movement, advocating for a new National Assembly with no incumbents returning, to break the cycle of failure.

Adebayo criticized the current political class as a "rump of military apologists" and desperate individuals, arguing that the APC is a symptom of deeper issues. "APC is a mutation of political cancer where desperate politicians who have nothing in common can be alarmed," he said. He called for fresh, patriotic leaders to enter politics, emphasizing that the SDP distinguishes itself by addressing core issues like insecurity, poverty, and injustice.

Presidential Ambitions and Call for Change

Adebayo confirmed his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election on the SDP platform. "By God's grace I have told my party that I want to be the presidential candidate of the SDP in 2027 and I want to win it for the Nigerian people," he declared. He urged Nigerians to view 2027 as a turning point, highlighting the urgent need to address insecurity, poverty, unemployment, and infrastructure decay.

In conclusion, Adebayo's remarks underscore the SDP's strategy of principled politics over what he perceives as the ADC's hypocritical alliances, setting the stage for a contentious political battle ahead of the 2027 elections.
