2027: Segelu Counters Ajadi, Says Makinde Already Restoring Oyo
Segelu: Oyo's Progress Under Makinde is Visible, Not Pending

A governorship hopeful within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State, Aare Olayinka Segelu, has firmly rejected the narrative that the state requires a restoration of development, asserting that significant progress is already underway under the leadership of Governor Seyi Makinde.

Clash of Aspirations Ahead of 2027

Segelu's statement, issued on Thursday, was a direct response to comments made by a fellow PDP aspirant, Ambassador Olufemi Ajadi Oguntoyinbo. During a recent visit to the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade I, Ajadi had framed his 2027 ambition around the goal of "restoring development, unity and prosperity" to Oyo State.

Segelu described this characterization as inaccurate and disconnected from the current realities on the ground. While acknowledging Ajadi's recent defection to the PDP and commending his consultation with the traditional ruler, Segelu emphasized that political communication must be grounded in fairness and responsibility.

Visible and Measurable Progress Cited

"Under the leadership of Governor Seyi Makinde, development in Oyo State is not waiting to be restored; it is already happening, visible, measurable and widely acknowledged across the zones," Segelu declared.

He proceeded to list the administration's recorded gains across multiple sectors, including:

  • Expansive road infrastructure projects across all seven geopolitical zones of the state.
  • Substantial improvements in the education and healthcare systems.
  • Advances in agriculture, energy, and industrial growth.
  • Enhanced workers' welfare and state security apparatus.

Segelu stressed that such tangible achievements should not be minimized for political gain. He argued that aspirants from the ruling party have a duty to project continuity and consolidation of existing successes, not paint a false picture of decline.

"As aspirants on the same PDP platform, our responsibility is to assure the people of Oyo State of continuity and deepening of the remarkable progress already delivered by this administration. We are not restoring development; we are advancing it," he added.

Vision for Continuity and Assembly's Confidence Vote

The aspirant outlined that his own governorship bid is anchored on strengthening Makinde's legacy, enhancing state institutions, empowering the youth, and driving further economic expansion. "My vision is to build on Governor Makinde's achievements and ensure that every community feels the impact of government," Segelu stated.

He urged all PDP aspirants to remain disciplined, cohesive, and factual in their engagements as the 2027 elections approach, noting that the party's strength lies in unity, proven performance, and truth.

In a related development underscoring the administration's standing, the Oyo State House of Assembly has passed a vote of confidence in Governor Seyi Makinde's government. The resolution was made during the House's first plenary in September after a six-week recess, held at the Assembly Chambers in Agodi, Ibadan.

The motion, moved by Majority Leader Hon. Sanjo Adedoyin and seconded by Chief Whip Hon. Gbenga Oyekola, commended the administration for its transparency, developmental focus, and performance. Lawmakers specifically highlighted:

  • Major road infrastructure projects across the state's zones.
  • Notable improvements in healthcare delivery and security.
  • An impressive increase in the state's Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) from N40 billion to N102 billion annually.

Segelu concluded that the coming election cycle will demand a united PDP that truly embodies progress and responsible leadership for the people of Oyo State.
