Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo has secured a decisive re-election victory in the 2025 Anambra state governorship election, cementing his position as the state's political leader for another term. The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) candidate achieved a remarkable sweep across all 21 local government areas, demonstrating widespread support from the electorate.
Historic Victory Margin
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officially declared Governor Soludo the winner on Sunday morning, November 9, 2025. The announcement came from Professor Edoba Omoregie, the INEC Returning Officer and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Benin, who presided over the results declaration at the commission's headquarters in Awka.
Professor Soludo amassed an impressive 422,664 votes, while his closest challenger, Nicholas Ukachukwu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), managed to secure only 99,445 votes. This substantial margin of over 320,000 votes represents one of the most decisive victories in recent Anambra political history.
Major Losers in the Political Contest
The election results revealed several significant political setbacks for prominent figures and parties. George Moghalu, the Labour Party candidate and former managing director of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), delivered a particularly disappointing performance, finishing in fourth position.
Even more surprising was the Labour Party's failure to win any local government area, despite the widespread popularity the party had enjoyed in previous elections. The Young Progressives Party (YPP) actually outperformed the Labour Party in vote count, contrary to many political observers' expectations.
Peter Obi, the Labour Party's 2023 presidential candidate and former Anambra governor, also emerged as a notable loser. His active involvement in the campaign, including personal appeals to his community, failed to translate into electoral success for his party's candidate.
Following the election results, Governor Soludo didn't hesitate to comment on Obi's failed efforts, stating: "Nobody likes to lose. I can understand the pain and frustration. For someone who put in everything they had in the process to unseat Soludo, even though he was not on the ballot, he thought he would raise somebody's hand to unseat Soludo."
Clear Winners from the Election
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu emerged as an unexpected beneficiary of the election outcome, despite belonging to a different political party from the victorious governor. The Nigerian leader publicly praised Soludo's performance, highlighting their political alliance across party lines.
In his official statement, President Tinubu commended: "I commend Governor Soludo for bringing discipline, grace, brilliance, and a fresh perspective to governance in Anambra. Under him, Anambra is living up to its motto as the Light of the Nation."
The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) strengthened its position as the dominant political force in Anambra state. The party's successful retention of the governorship reinforces its image as a formidable regional political machine with deep roots in the southeastern state.
Governor Soludo's comprehensive victory across all 21 local government areas demonstrates the successful implementation of his campaign strategy and the public's endorsement of his first-term performance as governor.
The election was not without tragedy, however, as Governor Soludo confirmed the killing of a councillor by gunmen in Owerre Ezukala community, Orumba South Local Government Area during the electoral process.
