Peter Obi Picks Enugu for ADC Defection: Obidients Leader Explains Strategic Move for 2027
Why Peter Obi Chose Enugu for ADC Defection - Tanko

The political landscape in Nigeria is set for a significant shift as Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), finalises plans to defect to the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The high-profile move is scheduled for Wednesday, December 31, 2025, at the Nike Lake Hotel in Enugu State.

Enugu: A Symbolic Choice for a Political Statement

Dr. Yunusa Tanko, the leader of the influential Obidient Movement, has shed light on the strategic reasoning behind choosing Enugu over Awka, Anambra State, for the defection ceremony. In a chat with Vanguard on Tuesday, December 30, Tanko emphasised the city's historical significance.

"Enugu is the historical capital of the East; it adds historical solidity when the East wants to make a statement," Tanko stated. This choice is seen as a deliberate signal from the South-East region aimed at shaping the narrative and dynamics for the 2027 general elections.

Tanko confirmed that leaders and members of the Obidient Movement are already gathered in Enugu in large numbers to offer their support. He described the event as a platform for Obi to chart the way forward for his numerous supporters across Nigeria.

The ADC Coalition and the 2027 Presidential Puzzle

This defection places Peter Obi squarely within the ADC coalition, a group that reportedly includes other political heavyweights like former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, and Rotimi Amaechi. Their collective goal is to unseat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 poll.

However, the coalition faces internal challenges. Obi himself has previously indicated that the ADC alliance remains "shaky and unstable". A major point of contention is the contest for the ADC's presidential ticket between Obi and Atiku. Political analysts suggest that any fallout between these two key figures could inadvertently work to the advantage of the incumbent, President Tinubu.

In an exclusive discussion with Legit.ng, ADC chieftain Kelly Agaba addressed the coalition's prospects, explaining what the chances would be if Obi decides not to work with Atiku in 2027.

What This Means for Nigeria's Political Future

Peter Obi's official departure from the Labour Party marks a critical realignment in opposition politics. His move to the ADC, underscored by the symbolic choice of Enugu, is more than a mere party switch; it is a calculated political statement intended to rally his vast support base and redefine the opposition's strategy.

The success of this new coalition hinges on its ability to present a united front and a clear alternative to the electorate. As supporters converge on Enugu for the December 31 event, all eyes will be on the next steps for the Obidient Movement and how this reshuffle will influence the campaign trail leading to 2027.
