Activist Aisha Yesufu Vows to Oppose Peter Obi If He Breaks One-Term Pledge
Prominent activist Aisha Yesufu has issued a strong warning, stating she will vehemently oppose Peter Obi if he ascends to the presidency and attempts to serve more than a single term. This declaration underscores her insistence that Obi must adhere to his repeated pledge to limit his tenure to one term if elected.
Television Interview Highlights Commitment to Accountability
During an interview on Arise Television on Monday, April 6, Yesufu emphasized the critical importance of political integrity. She asserted that Obi's promise to serve only one term is a cornerstone of his campaign and must be honored without exception.
"If Mr. Peter Obi gets into office and decides to do more than one term, I, Aisha Yesufu, said it here, I will oppose him with everything in me because he gave his word, and if he has given his word, he has to stick to his word," she declared passionately.
Historical Context of the One-Term Promise
Yesufu clarified that Obi's stance on a single-term presidency is not a recent development but predates the 2023 general election. She highlighted her personal engagement with him on this matter, noting that she has consistently sought assurances regarding his commitment.
"And by the way, he didn't start saying it after the 2023 election. He was saying it before the 2023 election," she pointed out, reinforcing the longevity of this promise.
Direct Reaffirmation from Peter Obi
Recounting a detailed interaction with the former Anambra governor, Yesufu disclosed that she initially questioned the feasibility of such a pledge. However, after the 2023 election, she sought a direct reaffirmation from Obi to ensure clarity and accountability.
"After the 2023 election, when he repeated it, I sat down with Mr. Peter Obi, and I said to him, I need your word on this... Is it true? You're going to do just one term," she explained.
According to Yesufu, Obi reaffirmed his commitment during this discussion, emphasizing his personal integrity. "He said, Aisha, I told you even in 2023, and I still mean it, because I said I'm going out and I'm telling people, this is what you have said, and I'm putting my name on it. I don't joke with my name. I don't joke with my integrity when I say something, I mean it," she added.
Vow of Resistance and Confidence in Integrity
Yesufu maintained that any attempt by Obi to renege on this promise would be met with fierce resistance. "He said he gave his word. He can't come back and say that he's going to do more than one term. We will fight him there," she asserted, underscoring her readiness to hold him accountable.
Despite this stern warning, she expressed confidence in Obi's character, describing him as "a man who keeps his word." This dual stance reflects her belief in his integrity while simultaneously preparing for potential political battles should he deviate from his pledge.
This development highlights ongoing discussions about political promises and accountability in Nigeria's democratic landscape, with activists like Yesufu playing a pivotal role in ensuring leaders uphold their commitments to the electorate.
