Kano Governor Yusuf Courts Ex-Governor Shekarau Amid 2027 Political Realignment
In a significant political development, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has reportedly held a high-stakes meeting with former governor Ibrahim Shekarau in Abuja. This encounter is part of ongoing political realignments in Kano, as the state gears up for the 2027 elections.
Meeting Focuses on Shekarau's Potential Return to APC
According to sources close to the discussions, the meeting centered on persuading Shekarau to rejoin the All Progressives Congress (APC). The APC Chairman in Kano State, Umar Haruna Doguwa, was present at the talks, underscoring the party's keen interest in bringing Shekarau back into its fold.
Shekarau, who currently belongs to the People's Democratic Party (PDP), has recently hinted at leaving the party. However, he has ruled out joining the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC), opening the door for APC negotiations. Insiders suggest that these discussions are ongoing and that Shekarau may ultimately rejoin the APC, a move that could reshape the political landscape in Kano.
Background of Political Shifts in Kano
The political dynamics in Kano have undergone notable changes following Governor Yusuf's departure from Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) to join the APC. In response, Kwankwaso has moved to the ADC to form new alliances, including with figures like Nasir Gawuna, in preparation for the 2027 elections.
Governor Yusuf has been vocal about his confidence in the APC's prospects, declaring that the ADC cannot win the 2027 elections in Kano State. He has championed the APC's achievements and promised further development if re-elected, labeling other parties such as the ADC and NNPP as lacking electoral viability in the state.
Recent Administrative Changes
In a related move, Governor Yusuf recently sacked Commissioner Shehu Wada Sagagi as part of a strategic government realignment. The governor acknowledged Sagagi's contributions to politics, religion, and Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) during his tenure, emphasizing his administration's focus on efficient service delivery and good governance.
This meeting between Yusuf and Shekarau comes barely a week after Shekarau indicated his intention to leave the PDP, highlighting the fluid nature of Kano's political scene as parties jostle for position ahead of the 2027 polls.
