Benue State Government Announces One-Week Easter Holiday for Workers
The Benue State Government has officially declared a one-week Easter break for all public and civil servants across the state. This significant announcement was made in a statement released by the Permanent Secretary for General Services, Godwin Tyolumun Tighil, acting on behalf of the Secretary to the State Government, Deborah Aber, on Tuesday.
Holiday Schedule and Governor's Approval
According to the statement titled "Declaration of Public Holiday to Mark Easter Celebration," the holiday period is set to commence on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, and conclude on Wednesday, April 8, 2026. Governor Hyacinth Alia personally approved this decision, directing that public servants close work by 1 p.m. on Tuesday to begin the Easter break promptly.
However, the statement clarified that workers involved in essential services are required to remain at their duty posts to address urgent matters affecting public welfare. This ensures that critical operations continue uninterrupted during the holiday period.
Governor's Easter Greetings and Historical Context
Governor Hyacinth Alia extended warm Easter greetings to the people of Benue State, encouraging them to use this time for prayer and reflection, particularly for peace in the state and across Nigeria. This development marks the first instance under Governor Alia's administration where a week-long Easter holiday has been granted to workers.
In previous years, the governor had approved a two-week holiday for workers during the Christmas period, highlighting a pattern of recognizing major Christian festivals with extended breaks.
Significance of Easter Celebration
Easter is a major Christian festival that commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ three days after his crucifixion. It symbolizes victory over death and the promise of eternal life for believers. Observed annually between March and April, the date of Easter varies each year as it is determined by the lunar calendar, specifically the first Sunday after the first full moon following the spring equinox.
This holiday declaration not only provides workers with a well-deserved break but also aligns with the cultural and religious observances significant to many residents of Benue State.
