The Federal Government has announced a collaborative initiative involving the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), and the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) to build a comprehensive digital address system for Nigeria. The move is designed to create a unified and verifiable addressing framework that will enhance governance, security, and economic development.
Why a Digital Address System Matters
Speaking at a stakeholders' meeting in Abuja, the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, explained that the initiative is part of the government's broader digital transformation agenda. He noted that a reliable address system is critical for efficient service delivery, emergency response, and planning.
Dr. Tijani emphasized that the collaboration would leverage the existing databases of NIMC (national identification numbers), CAC (business registration records), and NIPOST (postal codes and addressing infrastructure) to create a single source of truth for addresses across the country. This, he said, would reduce duplication and improve accuracy.
Key Agencies and Their Roles
NIMC is expected to provide identity verification services, linking addresses to individuals through the National Identification Number (NIN). CAC will contribute business addresses and corporate data, while NIPOST will offer its expertise in postal addressing standards and last-mile delivery logistics.
The Minister also highlighted the potential benefits for e-commerce, logistics, and financial inclusion, as businesses and individuals would have verifiable addresses. He stated that the system would support the government's efforts to formalize the economy and improve tax collection.
Implementation and Next Steps
According to a statement from the Ministry, the first phase will involve data harmonization and the development of a prototype addressing system. Pilot projects are expected to be launched in selected states before national rollout. The ministry aims to have the system operational within the next 18 months.
Stakeholders at the meeting, including representatives from NIMC, CAC, and NIPOST, expressed support for the initiative. They noted that collaboration would help overcome challenges such as inconsistent addressing and lack of standardized formats.
The digital address system is expected to align with global standards and enable Nigeria to meet its commitments under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) by facilitating trade and cross-border logistics.
