Kano Governor Yusuf Clears N32 Billion Gratuity and Death Benefit Backlog

In a significant move to fulfill his campaign promises, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has approved the settlement of a staggering N32 billion in outstanding gratuities and death benefits. This initiative targets retired civil servants and the families of deceased workers, addressing a financial burden that has lingered for years.

Latest Disbursement Brings Total to N32 Billion

During a ceremony at the Government House on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, Governor Yusuf flagged off the sixth tranche of payments, releasing an additional N5 billion. This latest disbursement elevates the cumulative total paid to N32 billion, out of an inherited backlog of N48 billion from previous administrations.

Governor Yusuf stated, "Today, we are releasing an additional N5 billion under the sixth tranche. This brings the cumulative total disbursed to N32 billion for the settlement of gratuity and death benefit arrears. I am pleased to note that the state government had earlier paid N27 billion in five tranches as of December 2025."

Commitment to Permanent Resolution

The governor reaffirmed his administration's unwavering commitment to permanently resolving the long-standing issue of unpaid gratuities and death benefits before the end of his first term in office. He emphasized that these payments are designed to provide lasting relief to pensioners and the families of deceased civil servants, who have endured financial hardships due to the backlog.

Governor Yusuf expressed deep appreciation to the leadership and members of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) for their understanding, cooperation, and patience throughout the process. Hajiya Bilkisu Maimota, Head of the Kano State Civil Service, and Alhaji Habu Muhammad Fagge, Executive Chairman of the Kano State Pension Fund Trustees, praised Governor Yusuf for his dedication to clearing the backlog within the first three years of his administration.
