Israeli Prime Minister Defends Military Campaign Against Regional Adversaries
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has robustly defended recent military actions targeting Iran and the militant groups Hamas and Hezbollah, asserting that sustained Israeli operations have significantly degraded their threat capabilities. Netanyahu delivered these remarks on Sunday during a high-profile visit to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Northern Command, accompanied by Defense Minister Israel Katz and IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir.
Netanyahu Declares Adversaries Weakened and Struggling
In a bold statement, Netanyahu declared, "Iran is not the same Iran, Hezbollah is not the same Hezbollah, and Hamas is not the same Hamas." He characterized these entities as weakened forces that are now grappling for survival due to Israel's relentless military pressure. The Prime Minister praised Israeli military commanders for their pivotal roles in what he termed a "multi-arena campaign," highlighting that Israel has escalated both defensive and offensive operations to preempt potential attacks.
According to Netanyahu, the application of "immense force" against Iran and its allies has resulted in "great accomplishments," including visible fractures within the leadership structures in Tehran. He specifically referenced the 2024 killing of former Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, crediting Israel with substantially reducing the group's military prowess.
Details on Hezbollah's Diminished Capabilities
"We eliminated Nasrallah and thousands of Hezbollah fighters. We also neutralised a major threat of about 150,000 missiles and rockets intended to target Israeli cities," Netanyahu stated, underscoring the scale of the neutralized arsenal. However, he acknowledged that Hezbollah retains some residual capacity to launch rockets, noting that ongoing discussions with military leaders aim to fully eradicate this lingering threat.
Potential US Military Base Relocation to Israel
Concurrently, Israeli media reports suggest that the government is contemplating inviting the United States to relocate certain Middle East military bases to Israel and establish new installations post-conflict. This strategic move could further solidify Israel's defense posture and regional alliances.
European Criticism Over Religious Freedom Restrictions
The developments have sparked criticism from European leaders, particularly concerning allegations that Israeli authorities impeded Catholics from observing Palm Sunday ceremonies in Jerusalem. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez condemned the action, labeling it an unjustified infringement on religious freedom.
"We condemn this unjustified attack on religious freedom and demand that Israel respect diversity of beliefs and international law," Sánchez asserted. Similarly, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney criticized the reported decision, emphasizing that it violates the longstanding status quo governing Jerusalem's holy sites and that individuals of all faiths should be able to worship freely without apprehension.
