Nigerian Woman Recounts Racist Eviction by Chinese Landlord in Shocking Incident
A Nigerian woman, Nwokoye Lynda, has publicly shared a deeply distressing experience involving racial discrimination during her time in China. In a recent Facebook post, she described an incident where her Chinese landlord abruptly ordered her and other tenants to vacate his apartment without any prior notice, explicitly stating that he did not want black people living there.
Scary, Unfair, and Humiliating Experience
Nwokoye characterized the event as scary, unfair, and humiliating, highlighting the emotional toll it took on her. According to her account, the landlord not only demanded their immediate departure but also refused to refund their house deposit, which amounted to 7,000 RMB. To escalate the situation, the landlord called the police on them, leading to a late-night ordeal at the police station.
At the station, Nwokoye and her companions pleaded for more time to arrange their exit. After lengthy negotiations, the landlord reluctantly agreed to allow them to stay for just one more night, but only under the condition that they pay an additional fee. Initially set at 400 RMB, they managed to reduce it to 250 RMB after persistent bargaining.
Police Involvement and Unresolved Deposit
Despite the police's presence and assurances that they would assist in resolving the deposit issue, Nwokoye revealed that the landlord never returned the 7,000 RMB. She expressed ongoing frustration and anger over this financial loss, noting that the police ultimately did nothing to enforce the refund, leaving her feeling betrayed and helpless.
The incident left a lasting impact on Nwokoye, who recounted sitting at the police station until 3 a.m., desperately trying to sort things out. She emphasized the humiliation of begging and explaining their situation, only to face indifference from authorities.
Broader Context of Discrimination
Nwokoye also mentioned another instance of racial prejudice during her stay in China. In a different apartment complex, she and others were denied access to the swimming pool, with their attempts to use it met with excuses and laughter from management. This pattern of exclusion further compounded her sense of injustice and alienation.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Nwokoye shared a poignant quote from her Facebook post: "I still can’t forget this. One evening in China, our landlord just comes, and says he doesn’t want a black person staying in his apartment. Then he calls the police and says we have to leave, that same night." She added that despite the trauma, they survived the experience, but it continues to evoke strong emotions.
Key Details and Aftermath
The incident underscores the challenges faced by foreigners, particularly black individuals, in navigating housing and legal systems abroad. Nwokoye's story has sparked discussions online about racism and tenant rights, highlighting the need for greater accountability and support for victims of discrimination.
To this day, Nwokoye has not recovered her deposit, and the memory of the event reignites her anger. Her account serves as a stark reminder of the pervasive issues of racism and unfair treatment that can occur in cross-cultural settings.
