Russia Issues Stern Warning to Finland Over Nuclear Weapons Policy Change
Russia has delivered a sharp warning to Finland, declaring that Helsinki's plan to lift restrictions on hosting nuclear weapons could be interpreted as a direct threat to Russian security. The Kremlin has signaled that Moscow would respond with appropriate measures if this proposal is implemented, marking a significant escalation in regional tensions.
Kremlin Spokesman Outlines Security Concerns
Speaking on Friday, March 6, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov emphasized that the deployment of nuclear weapons in Finland would fundamentally alter the security dynamics in the region. Peskov stated clearly, "By deploying nuclear weapons on its territory, Finland is beginning to threaten us." He added that Russia would take "appropriate measures" if such a step is taken, though specific details of these countermeasures were not disclosed.
Finland's NATO Alignment and Policy Shift
Finland, which became a member of NATO in 2023, has announced plans to remove its long-standing ban on nuclear weapons as part of its alignment with the alliance's deterrence strategy. Finnish Defence Minister Antti Hakkanen explained that the proposed policy change would permit nuclear weapons to be brought into the country, transported, delivered, or possessed within Finland if required for national defence purposes.
This strategic shift comes after Finland ended decades of military neutrality by joining NATO in April 2023, a decision directly influenced by Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine, ordered by President Vladimir Putin. Hakkanen noted that the security environment in both Finland and Europe has "fundamentally and significantly changed and deteriorated" since the onset of the conflict in Ukraine.
