Tinubu and Jonathan Engage in High-Level Closed-Door Meeting at Aso Villa
President Bola Tinubu welcomed former President Goodluck Jonathan to the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Wednesday for a private discussion focused on regional and continental matters. The meeting, which commenced at approximately 4 pm, was held behind closed doors at the State House, with details of the talks remaining undisclosed as of the reporting deadline.
Consultations on West African Political Developments
Officials described the engagement as part of ongoing high-level consultations, aligning with a pattern of periodic interactions between the two leaders. Sources indicated that the discussions likely centered on political developments in West Africa and Nigeria's broader diplomatic and continental engagements, reflecting Jonathan's active role in regional conflict mediation and governance issues.
Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed the visit through a brief post on X (formerly Twitter), sharing photographs of the encounter. He wrote, "President Tinubu meets former President Goodluck Jonathan at the Villa." Images from the meeting depicted both leaders in a relaxed setting, engaged in conversation inside the President's office.
Background and Context of the Meeting
A document titled "Two-Year Milestone" was visible in the background of the photographs, suggesting ongoing internal reviews of the administration's performance. The Presidency had not issued an official statement outlining the agenda or outcomes of the visit by the time of this report.
Jonathan's latest visit follows his last known appearance at the State House in November 2025, shortly after his evacuation from Guinea-Bissau amid a political crisis. At that time, he was leading a West African Elders Forum election observation mission when soldiers loyal to Brigadier-General Dinis Incanha reportedly staged a coup, detaining incumbent President Umaro Sissoco Embaló ahead of the official announcement of the November 23 presidential election results.
Jonathan was subsequently airlifted out of Bissau on a jet said to have been provided by Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara. The former Nigerian leader has remained actively involved in regional diplomacy and conflict mediation efforts, particularly within the West African sub-region, often engaging sitting leaders on issues of governance, elections, and stability.
This meeting underscores the continued collaboration between current and former Nigerian presidents in addressing critical regional challenges and advancing Nigeria's diplomatic interests on the continental stage.
