President Bola Tinubu has called on African leaders to focus on internal development and intra-continental trade as a pathway to prosperity. Speaking after the Africa CEO Forum panel discussion in Kigali, Rwanda, on Thursday, May 14, Tinubu shared his thoughts on social media on Friday, May 15.
Tinubu Advocates for Africa-First Approach
In a statement, the Nigerian president urged African nations to prioritize trade among themselves. He said, "Our continent cannot build scale by looking outward first. We must invest in one another, trade more with one another, build the corridors that connect our markets, ensure our innovative, youthful population get the support they need, and give African businesses the confidence to expand across African borders."
Reforms to Position Nigeria as a Leader
Tinubu emphasized that his ongoing reforms in Nigeria are designed not only to correct past mistakes but also to prepare the country to lead Africa in the future. He expressed confidence in transforming Africa's resources and population into "real continental prosperity."
Public Reactions to the President's Statement
Nigerians have responded to Tinubu's comments on social media. Mamatee praised the president, saying, "We hear you loud and clear, my president. You are the best." Fisayo Ademuwagun noted, "Africa has been selling raw materials to Europe and buying it back as finished products for 100 years. Tinubu dey talk about trading with ourselves first." Yeminem commended the president but urged him to work harder on the economy. Musah Isah called on Nigeria to lead the fight against neocolonialism.
