UN Warns: Lebanon Conflict Kills or Injures Classroom of Children Daily
The United Nations has issued a stark warning about the ongoing conflict in Lebanon, revealing that the violence is exacting a devastating toll on children, with the equivalent of an entire classroom of children being killed or wounded every single day since fighting escalated earlier this month.
Alarming Child Casualty Figures
According to official data from the Lebanese health ministry, at least 111 children have been killed and 334 wounded in Israeli strikes since March 2. This escalation began when Hezbollah initiated firing into Israeli territory, intensifying the broader regional conflict involving Israel. A senior official from UNICEF, the UN children's agency, described the horrific situation as children "paying a terrible price" and urgently called for de-escalation and a political solution to end the war.
Regional Impact and Displacement Crisis
The conflict's impact extends across the wider region, with reports indicating approximately 1,200 children have been killed in recent weeks. This includes nearly 200 in Iran, four in Israel, and one in Kuwait. In Lebanon alone, the violence has triggered a massive displacement crisis, forcing more than one million people from their homes, including around 350,000 children. Many are now sheltering in overcrowded public buildings, such as schools, where conditions are dire.
Severe Disruption to Education and Living Conditions
The displacement has severely disrupted education, with numerous children missing school or receiving only limited instruction. Compounding the problem, some schools have been converted into shelters, further complicating access to learning. Families in these shelters report difficult conditions, including shortages of:

- Heating
- Clean water
- Sanitation facilities
Humanitarian Response and Calls for Protection
In response, UNICEF is providing critical humanitarian support to affected families, including those remaining in heavily bombed areas of southern Lebanon. This aid encompasses water, sanitation supplies, warm clothing, and blankets. Meanwhile, Israel maintains that it does not deliberately target civilians and states that warnings are issued ahead of strikes to allow evacuation. The UN continues to urge all parties to protect civilian infrastructure and prioritize the safety and wellbeing of children caught in the conflict.
