Zelensky Warns Greenland Dispute Could Undermine Ukraine War Focus
Zelensky: Greenland Row Diverts Attention from Ukraine War

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has voiced significant apprehension that a diplomatic row over Greenland is diverting international attention away from Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine. Speaking on Tuesday, January 19, Zelensky emphasized that the conflict, now approaching its fourth year, requires sustained global focus and support from Western allies.

Trump's Greenland Ambitions Spark Tensions

US President Donald Trump recently renewed efforts to acquire Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, threatening European nations with tariffs of up to 25 percent if they oppose the plan. This aggressive stance has angered Brussels and introduced fresh strains on NATO unity at a critical juncture. Zelensky highlighted that such diplomatic rifts could weaken the collective support Ukraine desperately needs as it faces relentless Russian strikes on its energy infrastructure.

Zelensky's Urgent Appeal for Focus

"I'm worried about any loss of focus during a full-scale war," Zelensky told reporters during a press briefing. He stressed that debates over Greenland should not be conflated with the grave situation in Ukraine, where a clear aggressor and specific victims are involved. "We have a full-scale war, we have a specific aggressor, and we have specific victims," he reiterated, underscoring the distinct nature of the conflict.

Call for Stronger US-Europe Diplomacy

Zelensky urged Washington to engage more closely with European partners, advocating for enhanced diplomatic dialogue. "I want very, very much America to hear Europe, to truly hear it in the format of diplomacy. I think that's what will happen and I strongly believe there won't be any major threats," he stated. This appeal reflects Ukraine's reliance on a united Western front to counter Russian aggression and maintain stability in the region.

The timing of the Greenland dispute is particularly concerning for Ukraine, as it coincides with intensified military operations and humanitarian challenges. Zelensky's comments underscore the broader geopolitical implications of the row, which risks undermining international solidarity at a pivotal moment in the war.
