President Tinubu to Present 2026 Budget to National Assembly on Dec 19
Tinubu Presents 2026 Budget to NASS on Friday

President Bola Tinubu is set to formally present the proposed 2026 national budget to the Nigerian legislature this week, marking a crucial step in the country's annual fiscal planning cycle.

Official Schedule and Communication

A formal notification has been sent to the National Assembly, indicating that President Tinubu will address a joint session of the Senate and the House of Representatives on Friday, December 19, 2025. The presentation is scheduled to commence at 2:00 p.m. Nigerian time.

The advance communication originated from a letter dated December 17, 2025, which was signed by the Secretary for Human Resources and Staff Development, Admiral Essien Eyo Essien. He acted on behalf of the Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana. This letter, copied to the Deputy Clerk and various department heads, serves as the official groundwork for the President's visit.

Lawmakers will receive formal notice of the President's impending appearance during the plenary session of the House of Representatives on Thursday, December 18. This procedural step ensures the legislature is properly convened to receive the Commander-in-Chief.

Security and Logistics Arrangements

In preparation for the high-profile event, stringent security and access protocols have been established for the National Assembly Complex. The directive from the management stipulates that all accredited personnel must be at their designated duty posts by 11:00 a.m. on Friday.

Access to the complex will be heavily restricted after that time. The authorities have explicitly advised individuals without proper accreditation to stay away from the premises to ensure a smooth and secure event.

Special parking instructions have also been issued to staff members. To streamline movement and security, only the Clerk to the National Assembly, the Deputy Clerk, the Clerk of the House, the Clerk of the Senate, and their respective deputies are permitted to park in the main complex. All other staff are directed to use designated parking areas at the Annex or the new car park located by the National Assembly Service Gate.

Significance of the Budget Presentation

The presentation of the Appropriation Bill by the President is a constitutional and ceremonial highlight of Nigeria's governance calendar. It represents the formal submission of the Federal Government's fiscal estimates and policy priorities for the upcoming year to the legislative arm for scrutiny, debate, and ultimate approval.

This event kicks off the detailed legislative process where committees will dissect the proposals, hold hearings with ministers and agency heads, and make adjustments before passing the bill into law. The 2026 budget presentation is therefore the starting point for defining the nation's economic direction for the next fiscal cycle.
