Archbishop Urges Otti to Stay Focused, Avoid Negative Criticism

The Most Rev. Chibuzo Opoko, Methodist Archbishop of Umuahia, has called on Abia State Governor Alex Otti to remain steadfast and focused, emphasizing that history honors leaders who prioritize the welfare of their people. He advised the governor not to let negative criticism derail his objectives.

Speaking at a grand reception organized by the people of Ikwuano, Umuahia North, and Umuahia South local councils in honor of the governor, Opoko noted that Otti has restored hope and dignity to Abia State both locally and internationally. He highlighted that Abians are pleased with his leadership and have gathered to celebrate his redefinition of governance within a short period.

The archbishop commended the administration for demonstrating that leadership anchored on vision, integrity, and service can transform society. He praised the massive work at Amachara Medical Centre (formerly Methodist Hospital, Amachara), the Abia State Specialist Hospital with state-of-the-art equipment, the upgrade of Primary Health Centres to international standards, and the governor's impact on education.

Opoko called for another four-year term for Otti, stating that Abians want him to continue delivering democratic dividends. He remarked, "Your decision and implementation of free education for all Abia children from primary to secondary school is a landmark achievement. Hiring over 5,000 teachers, and an additional 4,000 teachers, is profound and epoch-making. The smart schools you are building in Ubakala and School Road in Umuahia are great strides."

The cleric acknowledged that many roads have become motorable due to the governor's impactful leadership. He described Abia State under Dr. Otti as completely transformed, like a bride on her wedding morning. "Our institutions are gaining strength. Omenuko Bridge is no longer a place where motorists whisper prayers in fear. The State Government Secretariat now stands with dignity. Michael Okpara Square and Aguiyi Ironsi Boulevard are statements of purposeful administration."

He added, "The International Conference Centre Umuahia, the old state secretariat at Ogurube Layout, and the Michael Okpara Auditorium have all been uplifted. From Library Avenue to Okpara Square to Federal Medical Centre is a spectacle. You have also contributed to road network facelifts within the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia, despite it being a federal institution. Truly, Abia State is no longer whispering progress; it is announcing it."

Opoko recalled how erosion affected communities like Elugwu Nkata, Afarata, Umuchime Ossah, and Emede Ibeku, and the governor's quick intervention saved residents. The reception also celebrated the world-class Umuahia Central Bus Terminal and the governor's plan for an ultra-modern railway station.

Despite these strides, the chairman of the occasion implored the governor to address the International Stadium Complex project, describing it as a landmark that would promote sports development, stimulate economic activities, and position the state globally in sporting events.
