The Edo State Government has issued a directive for the reopening of schools that were temporarily closed due to security concerns. The initial closure took place on June 9, 2026, following intelligence reports indicating potential security threats in parts of the Edo North Senatorial District.
Government Decision
In a statement released by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Mrs Enodolomwanyi Otamere, the government has instructed affected schools to resume academic activities starting June 15, 2026. According to Otamere, the decision to reopen was made after a thorough assessment of the security situation, conducted in collaboration with relevant security agencies and other stakeholders.
Enhanced Security Measures
The statement further noted that improved security protocols have been established, and additional safety mechanisms have been deployed across affected communities and schools. These measures aim to ensure the protection of students, teachers, and all school personnel.
Consequently, all public and private schools impacted by the earlier closure order are now required to resume normal academic and administrative operations from June 15. School heads, proprietors, and education authorities have been instructed to make adequate preparations for the safe return of students and staff. They are also expected to maintain close collaboration with security agencies, community leaders, and government officials to sustain a secure learning environment.
Appeal to Parents
The government has appealed to parents and guardians to ensure that their children and wards return to school to continue their academic activities. It assured them that all necessary measures have been implemented for the safety of the schools.
