Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Otu, has pledged to continue executing projects and programmes that will enhance the living conditions of citizens in the state. The governor made the pledge in a remark during an interdenominational thanksgiving service held at the Cathedral Church of the Holy Trinity, Calabar, to mark the 2026 Democracy Day celebration on Friday.
Governor Otu's Remarks at Democracy Day
Governor Otu, represented by his deputy, Rt. Hon. Peter Odey, said June 12 stands as a testament to the courage of Chief MKO Abiola and other Nigerian electorates who, through sheer resolve and unity of purpose, defied all odds to affirm that sovereignty truly belongs to the people. According to the governor, the 27 years of unbroken democracy, which coincides with the three years of remarkable strides of his administration, is a true reflection of the resolve of Cross Riverians to uphold the tenets of democratic values and deepen institutions.
Appreciation for President Tinubu
He expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the purposeful and selfless leadership he has continued to provide for the country, saying it has brought succour and hope for future generations. He also assured that the water and sanitation sector under his administration will continue to witness tremendous transformation. He reiterated his resolve to consolidate achievements in infrastructure, education, healthcare, agriculture, economic empowerment, and human capital development, while soliciting continued support from the people.
Security and Infrastructure Achievements
He noted that in the last three years, his administration has tackled insecurity, adding that Cross River now ranks among the most peaceful states in Nigeria. He thanked security agencies for the achievement and promised to completely rid the state of all forms of criminality. On infrastructure, the governor said his administration has awarded a total of 426.72km of road projects, out of which 170.52km have been asphalted and completed, while 316.2km are at various stages of completion. He also listed other achievements to include the comprehensive renovation of the State Library Complex, upgrade of the Governor’s Office Complex and Local Government Service Commission Complex, provision of solar power to several communities, rehabilitation of dilapidated courts across the state, acquisition of two additional aircraft to boost the CallyAir fleet, and completion of hydrographic mapping for the Calabar Deep Seaport project, among other projects in agriculture, health, and education.
Gratuity Payments
He further disclosed that his administration inherited a backlog of unpaid gratuities dating back to 2007, adding that within the first three months in office, N10 billion was approved for payment to retirees, with plans to clear the outstanding balance within the next two months.
Bishop's Sermon and Other Attendees
Earlier in his sermon, the Bishop of the Diocese of Calabar, Anglican Communion, Prof. Nneoyi Egbe, urged Nigerians to cultivate the attitude of gratitude to God regardless of socio-economic challenges, noting that gratitude brings positive change in individuals and the nation. He reminded the congregation, especially public office holders, that their achievements and successes are due to divine grace and not personal effort alone. The service was attended by the Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Peter Odey, the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Elvert Ayambem, members of the State Assembly, members of the diplomatic corps, and service commanders, among others. The Thanksgiving service was followed by a special Juma’at service at the Mopol 11 Mosque, Calabar.
Commissioner's Remarks
