The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has reaffirmed the readiness of the Nigeria Police Force to ensure a peaceful, secure, free, and credible governorship election in Ekiti State. Disu gave the assurance on Thursday while attending the Election Stakeholders' Meeting and signing of the Peace Accord held in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital.
Stakeholders Meeting and Peace Accord
The meeting brought together major electoral and political stakeholders, including representatives of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the National Peace Committee led by former Head of State Abdulsalami Abubakar, political parties, candidates, traditional rulers, civil society organisations, security agencies, religious leaders, and members of the diplomatic and observer community. This was contained in a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Okon Placid, through the official X handle of the Nigeria Police Force.
Commendations and Commitments
The IGP commended INEC and the National Peace Committee for sustaining initiatives aimed at promoting peaceful democratic participation and strengthening public confidence in the electoral process. He also praised Abdulsalami for his continued commitment to peace, national unity, and democratic stability in the country. Disu further reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force, in collaboration with other security agencies under the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security, to ensuring a peaceful and credible election across Ekiti State.
Comprehensive Deployment Plans
According to him, comprehensive deployment plans and operational strategies have already been concluded for the state's 16 local government areas, 154 wards, and more than 2,400 polling units. He disclosed that personnel and operational assets had been strategically positioned across the state to guarantee the safety of voters, electoral officials, observers, and other participants during the election.
Professionalism and Impartiality
The police boss also assured residents that the Force would remain professional and impartial throughout the election period, while urging political actors to abide by the Peace Accord and conduct their activities peacefully. He encouraged eligible voters in the state to freely exercise their constitutional rights without fear, assuring them of adequate security before, during, and after the election.
The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its commitment to protecting democratic values, maintaining public order, and ensuring the peaceful conduct of elections across the country.
