The Lagos State Government has initiated plans to introduce specialised vehicle number plates for persons with disabilities, following a strategic meeting between two key agencies. The Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA) visited the Lagos State Motor Vehicle Administration Agency (MVAA) to discuss collaboration on designing and implementing the dedicated identification system.
Governor's Vision for Inclusive Governance
The permanent secretary of MVAA, Abdulrasheed Muri-Okunola, described the initiative as central to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu's vision of building a greater Lagos that leaves no one behind. He stated that the specialised number plates would enhance recognition, accessibility, and ease of movement for persons with disabilities throughout the state. The MVAA has already opened discussions with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on the proposed plates and will initiate necessary administrative steps in close partnership with LASODA.
Broader Coverage for Caregivers and Parents
LASODA General Manager Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal urged that the scheme extend beyond individual disabled persons to include parents of children with disabilities and their caregivers. She emphasised that the initiative should cover all categories of persons with disabilities, as well as those who support them. The system aims to improve identification, accessibility, and support for the disability community, underscoring the government's commitment to inclusion and equal opportunities.
Alignment with State Law
The proposed number plates align with the Lagos State Special People's Law, which established LASODA to protect the rights of persons with disabilities, eliminate discrimination, and promote equal opportunities across all sectors. The meeting brought together directors and senior management staff from both agencies, reflecting a coordinated effort to advance the welfare of persons with disabilities. Both agencies affirmed their dedication to pushing the initiative forward, calling on stakeholders to embrace inclusion as a shared responsibility.
