The Lagos State Government has announced a partial traffic disruption on the Kara Bridge section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, as repair works on the bridge's expansion joint are scheduled to commence on Tuesday, July 28, 2026. The rehabilitation, to be carried out by the Federal Ministry of Works, is expected to last for two weeks.
Lane Reduction and Traffic Impact
According to a statement from the Ministry of Transportation, the repair work will require a temporary reduction of the existing four-lane carriageway to two lanes along a 1.5-kilometre stretch of the bridge. This reduction is necessary to create a safe working environment for engineers. The ministry noted that the lane reduction is expected to cause moderate traffic around the Fatgbems Turn, as some motorists may choose to make U-turns or seek alternative routes to avoid potential delays.
Guidance for Motorists
The ministry assured road users that vehicles traveling towards Ibadan beyond the Fatgbems Turn should experience little or no disruption throughout the repair period. Motorists are advised to plan their trips ahead of time, consider alternative routes where possible, obey traffic regulations, and cooperate with traffic management officials deployed along the corridor to ease traffic flow.
Appeal for Understanding
The Lagos State Government also appealed for public understanding, emphasizing that the rehabilitation is aimed at improving the safety and durability of Kara Bridge for the benefit of all road users. The statement read: “To facilitate the repair works, the existing four-lane carriageway will be temporarily reduced to two lanes over a 1.5-kilometre stretch to provide a safe work zone.”
