NBC Boss Clarifies Regulatory Actions, Calls for Professionalism

The Director General of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), Charles Ebuebu, has clarified the commission's recent regulatory actions, insisting they are not an assault on press freedom but a firm reminder that broadcasting in the country must be guided by professionalism, fairness, and neutrality.

Recall that the NBC issued a notice on April 17, 2026, which warned broadcast stations and presenters against violations of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code. Responding to growing concerns over press freedom and alleged censorship of broadcasters during an interview on Arise TV, Ebuebu emphasized that presenters and anchors are free to ask questions, solicit opinions, and deliver balanced commentaries. However, they must never state personal opinions as facts, bully guests, deny fair hearing, or pass judgment on matters pending before the courts.

Editorial Responsibility Lies with Broadcasters

Ebuebu stated that editorial responsibility lies with the broadcaster and not invited guests. He advised broadcast stations to verify and substantiate serious allegations before airing them, as unverified claims risk breaching the code and exposing stations to libel and slander liability.

Structured Enforcement Process

In the area of sanctions, Ebuebu outlined the commission's structured enforcement process under Classes A, B, and C. He noted that licensees are always given the opportunity to respond and present their case before any final action is taken.

He further maintained that the NBC's mandate is to uphold standards that protect both journalists and the public interest, while ensuring full compliance with the 1999 Nigerian constitution and the nation's international human rights obligations.

In conclusion, Ebuebu assured that the NBC remains committed to a broadcasting environment where freedom and responsibility go hand in hand.
