Nigeria Bans Honorary Degree Holders from Using 'Dr' Title
Nigeria Bans 'Dr' Title for Honorary Degree Holders

The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially barred individuals who have received honorary degrees from using the title 'Dr' before their names. This announcement was made by the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, during a press briefing held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Wednesday, May 6, 2026.

Decision from Federal Executive Council

Minister Alausa revealed that the decision was taken during the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on April 30, 2026. He emphasized that this move is intended to put an end to the decades-long practice of indiscriminate conferment of honorary degrees, which has often been exploited for political patronage and financial gain.

Abuse of Academic Privilege

Alausa stated, "The recent trend we've seen with the award of honorary degrees has revealed a growing abuse and politicisation of this academic privilege. We've seen awards being used for political patronage, for financial gain, as well as the conferral of awards on serving public officials, which, as part of the ethics of honorary degree awards, should not happen."

Sanctions for Violating Universities

The Minister warned that universities found violating the FEC decision will face sanctions. He added that Vice Chancellors have been directed to streamline the process of awarding honorary degrees. Going forward, universities must seek approval from the Nigerian University Commission (NUC) before conferring any honorary degrees.

Stricter Oversight

This new policy aims to restore integrity to the academic system and ensure that honorary degrees are awarded based on merit and genuine contributions to society, rather than as tools for political or financial benefits. The government expects compliance from all tertiary institutions across the country.
