Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has launched a grassroots engagement initiative aimed at identifying and addressing the specific needs of communities across the state. The initiative, described as a “people-driven development approach,” involves visits by the governor or designated officials to communities, where residents are encouraged to outline projects and interventions they want the government to undertake based on their peculiar needs and comparative advantages.
Community Priorities
Communities are expected to prioritize areas such as water supply, electricity, roads, markets, industries, hospitals, educational institutions, and even appointments for qualified indigenes.
Chief of Staff Confirms Initiative
The Chief of Staff to the Governor, Dr. Caleb Ajagba, confirmed the development during a community engagement and town hall meeting held in Ugwunagbo Local Government Area, where he represented Governor Otti. Ajagba explained that the town hall engagements were deliberately designed to ensure that government policies, projects, and interventions align with the real expectations and aspirations of people at the grassroots.
Direct Interaction with Communities
Addressing stakeholders, traditional rulers, community leaders, women, youths, and residents at the meeting, he stressed that every community has unique developmental priorities that can only be properly addressed through direct interaction with the people. According to him, the Otti administration is committed to governance based on the actual needs and challenges of communities rather than assumptions.
“This is why we are in Ugwunagbo today — to see things for ourselves, listen directly to you, and understand your exact needs,” Ajagba stated.
Transforming Requests into Projects
He added that the requests and demands presented during the engagements would be carefully reviewed and transformed into practical projects and programmes capable of improving the living conditions of residents. “I have today, on behalf of Governor Otti, received a comprehensive document detailing your needs and expectations. Government will scrutinise it and work with your representatives to translate them into impactful projects and programmes that will improve the fortunes of Ugwunagbo people,” he assured.
Achievements of Otti Administration
Ajagba further argued that the achievements recorded by the Otti administration in less than three years distinguish it from previous administrations, describing the governor as a visionary leader committed to development across various sectors of the state. “If Governor Otti has achieved this much in less than three years, one can imagine what Abia will become at the end of his second tenure,” he said.
Apparently drawing a comparison with previous administrations, Ajagba said past governments failed to address many of the state’s challenges due to a lack of vision and capacity. “Today, Abia is being celebrated because God prepared Governor Otti as a leader with solutions,” he added.
Call for Support
The Chief of Staff also urged residents of the state to support the governor’s re-election bid in 2027 by actively participating in the ongoing electoral process through voter registration, obtaining Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), and turning out to vote.
