The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Emeka Ihedioha, has assured that the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) will be passed into law soon, ending speculation about its fate. He gave the assurance at the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) Stakeholders’ Engagement on the bill in Lagos, yesterday.
PIB to Provide Comprehensive Legal Framework
Ihedioha stated that the PIB, once enacted, would lay a solid foundation for transparency, structural, commercial, and fiscal frameworks for the oil and gas sector in Nigeria. He emphasized that the bill would drive broader reforms in the sector, addressing long-standing issues that have hindered its growth.
Uncertainty Causing Capital Flight and Suspended Investments
The Deputy Speaker highlighted that the lack of a comprehensive, all-inclusive legal framework to guide oil and gas operations has led to massive capital flight and the suspension of critical investments in the sector. He noted that the uncertainty generated by the absence of such a framework has been detrimental to Nigeria's economy.
Stakeholders Engagement and Next Steps
The NEITI stakeholders’ engagement served as a platform to discuss the bill's provisions and gather input from various stakeholders. Ihedioha's assurance provides a clear signal that the legislative process will move forward, potentially unlocking investments and fostering transparency in the sector.
