President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to prioritize unity, fairness, and sportsmanship as the party launches its nationwide primary elections ahead of the 2026 general elections. The primaries, which began with House of Representatives contests and are set to conclude with the presidential primary on May 25, represent a critical test of the party's cohesion and democratic values.
Defining Moment for the APC
In a statement released before the primaries, President Tinubu described the exercise as a defining moment for the party. He noted that the APC, founded on progressive politics, consensus-building, and sacrifice, was preparing for its fourth electoral cycle since inception. Tinubu emphasized that the primaries should not merely be a process of selecting candidates but an opportunity for members to renew their commitment to the ideals that bind the party together.
Consensus and Internal Harmony
The President acknowledged ongoing consultations among party leaders aimed at producing consensus candidates in line with the Electoral Act and the APC constitution. He described this approach as commendable and capable of reducing internal rancour. Tinubu urged members to take advantage of the consensus option where possible to strengthen party unity and ensure a seamless exercise. However, he stressed that where consensus arrangements fail, all aspirants and delegates must conduct themselves peacefully and democratically throughout the primaries.
Warning Against Divisive Politics
Tinubu cautioned against divisive politics and warned that the party could not afford conduct capable of undermining internal cohesion or weakening Nigeria's democratic process. He advised winners not to gloat over victory, while urging unsuccessful aspirants to demonstrate sportsmanship and remain committed to the party. “Our opponents are waiting for us to be against each other; we should disappoint them,” he stated.
Reconciliation and Level Playing Field
The President called on victorious aspirants and party leaders at all levels to reconcile aggrieved members and avoid what he described as “do-or-die politics.” According to him, politics should not be treated as a zero-sum contest, noting that every APC candidate ultimately represents the collective interest of the party. Tinubu also urged governors, party executives, and other stakeholders to ensure fairness by providing all aspirants with a level playing field. While acknowledging that only one candidate would emerge for each position, he said those who lose should at least be satisfied that the process was transparent and credible.
Inclusion of Women and Youth
The President equally appealed for greater inclusion of women and young people in the party’s affairs, urging delegates and leaders to give them special consideration during the primaries. He said the APC could not afford to sideline two of the country’s most significant demographic groups.
Security Agencies' Role
Tinubu also charged the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to remain professional and impartial during the exercise, insisting that their role should be limited strictly to maintaining peace and order. He wished all aspirants success in the primaries and expressed optimism that the eventual candidates would work together to secure victory for the APC in the general elections.
