The United Arab Emirates has officially listed eight conditions that foreign residents must satisfy to sponsor family members for a residency permit linked to an Emirates ID card. The requirements, published on the official portal of the UAE's Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security, apply to family members of foreign residents seeking to live in the country.
Key Conditions for Sponsorship
The first condition concerns passport validity. The passport of the family member being sponsored must remain valid for at least six months at the time of applying. This is a non-negotiable documentation requirement for all applicants.
Second, the published terms specify which family members are eligible for sponsorship. A foreign national living in the UAE may sponsor a spouse, unmarried daughters, sons younger than 25, and children with special needs. Additionally, holders of the UAE Green Residence Permit are allowed to sponsor first-degree relatives beyond the immediate family unit.
Third, the sponsor must already hold a valid UAE residency permit at the time of application. The family members' residency period cannot extend beyond the duration of the sponsor's own permit.
Financial and Housing Requirements
Financial solvency is the fourth condition. The sponsor must demonstrate a minimum monthly income of AED 3,000, provided the employer supplies accommodation. Where housing is not covered by the employer, the income threshold rises to AED 4,000 per month.
Fifth, adequate housing must be arranged for all incoming family members. The property, whether owned or rented, must be proportionate to the capacity of the family.
Sixth, proof of kinship must be submitted to establish the relationship between the sponsor and the applicant. This is a mandatory part of the application process.
Residency Matching and Processing Time
Seventh, the family residence must match the sponsor's permit and cannot exceed it. This ensures that the family's residency status is directly tied to the sponsor's own valid permit.
Eighth, and most critical for timing, once a family member enters the UAE for the purpose of completing the residency process, the permit must be finalised within 60 days of the date of entry. Failure to meet this deadline will result in overstay fines being imposed on the applicant.
