Abia Deputy Mayor: Men Are Polygamous, Women Shouldn't Cheat Back

The Deputy Mayor of Bende Local Government Area in Abia State, Hon. Mrs. Ngozi Anya, has publicly criticized women for promoting the idea that cheating on a husband is an acceptable response to his infidelity. In a Facebook post on Sunday, May 17, 2026, she expressed her views on marital fidelity and gender roles.

Controversial Remarks on Marriage

Anya stated that her daughters will be raised to understand that men are inherently polygamous, a trait she attributed to divine design. She emphasized that a married woman engaging in extramarital affairs is an abomination in Igbo culture. The Deputy Mayor declared that she would welcome her daughters back home if they could not tolerate their husband's unfaithfulness, rather than retaliating in kind.

Calling Out Women's Hypocrisy

In her post, Anya accused women of proudly teaching the next generation that the best punishment for a cheating husband is to cheat back. She wrote, “My gender is proudly teaching the next generation that the best punishment for a cheating husband is to cheat back. Ooh ye! If your husband cheats, cheat back. Once you’re caught, we will all be here to defend you shamelessly.”

She further stated, “My own daughters will grow up to understand that men are polygamous in nature, that’s how God wired them. If you find out that your husband is cheating and you can’t emotionally withstand it, come back to my house Nwam! I will proudly receive you back. They will grow up to understand that sleeping with another man while still in their husband’s house is an abomination in Igbo land.”

Reactions and Cultural Context

The post has sparked mixed reactions, with some supporting her stance on traditional values and others criticizing her for justifying male infidelity. Anya concluded with a call to her gender: “For my gender, zuzuwanu! Agbacha egwu ya ala n’ ukwu!” which translates to a plea for women to stop this behavior.
