Supreme Knight Calls Voting a Vital Christian Duty in Nigeria
Sir Steve Adehi, the newly elected Supreme Knight of the Order of Knights of Saint Mulumba Nigeria (KSM), has urged Christians, particularly Catholics, to recognize voting in elections as a crucial aspect of responsible citizenship. In an exclusive interview, Adehi, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and President of the Papal Knights Association, outlined his vision for the Order, emphasizing civic engagement, security, and spiritual renewal.
Election Victory and Leadership Responsibilities
Adehi expressed humility and a deep sense of responsibility following his election at the 46th Supreme Convention in Kaduna. He noted the overwhelming support from members who expect him to revitalize the Order. "I felt really humbled by the trust placed in me," Adehi said. "Many whispered, 'We believe you can turn this Order around and make it great again.' This has increased the burden on me, but I am committed to not letting them down." He emphasized that this responsibility keeps him focused on implementing positive changes.
Building on Legacy with Modern Reforms
With KSM celebrating seven decades in Nigeria, Adehi acknowledged the contributions of past leaders while highlighting the need for modernization. He plans to establish an endowment fund to ensure financial sustainability, using interest to cover operational expenses. "This will make the Order resilient and liquid enough for ambitious projects," he explained. Additionally, Adehi has formed specialized committees to address key areas, including security, media, and investments.
Security and Advocacy Initiatives
In response to attacks on churches, particularly in northern and southern Nigeria, Adehi has set up a security committee comprising knights with expertise in peacekeeping and military operations. The committee has submitted an interim report to the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), proposing intelligence-gathering frameworks to protect parishes without arms. "We cannot take laws into our hands, but we can advocate and advise on protecting lives and properties," Adehi stated.
Mobilizing Christians for Political Participation
Adehi highlighted voter apathy as a critical issue, noting a decline in participation since 1999. Through the Joint Alliance of Catholic Knights (JACK), he has proposed a campaign to mobilize Christians to register and vote. "Christians should see voting as a crucial part of responsible citizenship," he asserted. "They must engage in political party politics and defend their votes on election day." The Order has distributed enlightenment jingles to Metropolitan and Sub-councils to raise awareness.
Spiritual and Charitable Focus
To deepen spirituality among members, Adehi has directed a shift from lavish entertainment to spiritual growth in meetings. "Every member should be able to recite the rosary and pray confidently," he said. On charity, he praised initiatives like the Ladies of Saint Mulumba's 'Touching Lives' project, which provided seed money to over 200 women. He plans to expand partnerships abroad to support IDPs and attacked churches.
Youth Engagement and Technological Modernization
Addressing an aging membership, Adehi has instructed Metropolitan Grand Knights to recruit younger knights, emphasizing the need for new energy. He also established an ICT committee to modernize operations, including making degree exams computer-based and improving online accessibility. "Knights should get information with a click," he noted. For youth, he aims to restructure the Youths of Saint Mulumba (YSM) by basing it in parishes and Catholic universities like Veritas University, Abuja, to foster future membership.
Addressing Internal Challenges and Public Perceptions
Adehi addressed frictions between Grand Knights and LSM Presidents, urging cooperation and respect. On public misconceptions about KSM being a cult, he emphasized transparency in admissions and ceremonies, inviting public participation. "People spread rumors due to lack of information," he said, noting that bishops have endorsed their activities.
Balancing Leadership and Personal Life
As a family man and professional, Adehi strives to balance his roles by managing time efficiently and reducing stress through regional events. He appealed to knights and ladies for support and patience in driving reforms. "I am overstretching myself for the Order, and I expect similar commitment from members," he concluded.
