Coroner Inquest into Death of Chimamanda Adichie's Son Scheduled for April 14

The coroner's inquest into the tragic death of 21-month-old Nkanu Nnamdi Esege, the son of acclaimed Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and her husband Dr Ivara Esege, is officially set to begin proceedings at the Yaba Magistrate Court on April 14, 2026. This development marks a critical step in the legal process following the child's passing earlier this year.

Court Proceedings and Key Dates

Magistrate Atinuke Adetunji confirmed the commencement date during a court session held on February 25, 2026, when the matter was initially brought before the bench. The inquest aims to thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding Nkanu's death, which occurred on January 7, 2026, after he received medical care at two prominent hospitals in Lagos.

The child was first admitted to Atlantis Hospital in Lagos for what was described as a mild illness that subsequently worsened. As part of preparations to transfer him to Johns Hopkins Hospital in the United States for specialized treatment, Atlantis Hospital referred him to Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital for pre-flight diagnostic procedures. These procedures included an MRI scan, a lumbar puncture, and the insertion of a central line. Tragically, Nkanu passed away following these medical interventions.

Allegations and Legal Representation

Adichie and Dr Esege have publicly alleged medical negligence and professional misconduct in connection with their son's death, prompting the need for a formal inquest. During the recent court hearing, legal representatives from various parties were present to outline their positions.

Professor Kemi Pinheiro (SAN) announced his appearance on behalf of the bereaved family, while Adebola Rahman represented the Attorney-General of Lagos State. Professor Cheluchi Onyemelukwe, from Health Ethics and Law Consulting, appeared for Atlantis Hospital, and Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital also had legal representation in court.

The court has adjourned the matter until April 14, 2026, when the hearing will officially commence. This inquest is expected to delve into detailed medical evidence and testimonies to ascertain the facts and potential liabilities in this heartbreaking case.
