Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court in Abuja has strongly rebuked a plaintiff, Johnmary Jideobi, and his lawyer, Ndubuisi Ukpai, for their lack of diligence in a lawsuit aimed at preventing former President Goodluck Jonathan from contesting the 2027 presidential election. The judge described their conduct as unacceptable and imposed a fine of N1 million against the plaintiff in favor of the former president.
Details of the Court Case
The case was initially filed on October 6, 2025, by Jideobi. However, over six months later, the court noted that the plaintiff had failed to serve the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), who are the second and third defendants. Justice Lifu expressed surprise at this delay and criticized the plaintiff's team for stalling the hearing.
Jonathan's Counsel Response
During the May 8 court session, Chris Uche, counsel to former President Jonathan, informed the court that he and his client only learned about the case through social media. Despite this, they promptly filed and served their legal processes. The judge observed that on May 11, neither the plaintiff nor his lawyer appeared in court, even though the hearing was scheduled at their own request.
Public Reactions
Nigerians have reacted to the court's decision, with many criticizing the plaintiff and his lawyer. A user named Sule urged Jonathan not to contest, stating that his candidacy would only harm the PDP. Olatunji questioned the motives behind the suit, while Fola faulted the lawyer's understanding of the law. Emmy expressed anticipation for Jonathan's presidential declaration.
The case highlights the importance of diligence in legal proceedings and the court's authority to penalize frivolous or delayed actions.
